{"id":10316,"date":"2016-10-24T14:27:56","date_gmt":"2016-10-24T13:27:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=10316"},"modified":"2016-10-27T15:53:51","modified_gmt":"2016-10-27T14:53:51","slug":"protecting-pensions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=10316","title":{"rendered":"Protecting pensions"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>The \u00e2\u20ac\u0098pig-headed\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 failure of Post Office bosses to hold constructive talks over the closure of the defined salary pension scheme has prompted more than seven hundred managers to stage a second 24-hour strike next Monday (31 October).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The managers \u00e2\u20ac\u201c who are members of the country\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s largest union \u00e2\u20ac\u201c will walkout from 03:00 on 31 October, along with the Communication Workers Union (CWU), in the dispute embracing pensions, job losses and the franchising of Crown post offices.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unite has warned that more strikes could be on the cards in the run-up to Christmas, causing severe disruption at this peak time of the year.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unite officer for the Post Office Brian Scott said: \u00e2\u20ac\u015bOur members were angered at the announcement earlier this month that Post Office management has requested the pension scheme\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s trustees close the scheme from the end of March 2017.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00e2\u20ac\u0098Pig-headed\u00e2\u20ac\u2122<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe senior management has been pig-headed in refusing to enter into meaningful and constructive talks with the unions on these abysmal pension changes.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe cannot just stand by and see the retirement incomes of our members being eroded by thousands of pounds.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This decision is unnecessary and mean spirited as the pension scheme is currently in surplus to the extent of more than \u00c2\u0141143 million.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe, once again, call on the Post Office to reverse its decision to close the scheme.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>\u00e2\u20ac\u0098More strikes\u00e2\u20ac\u2122<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bUnless the management enters into talks in a positive frame of mind, more strikes are probable in the run-up to Christmas \u00e2\u20ac\u201c the busiest time of the year.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe senior management team seems unable to provide a coherent business plan for the future.
