{"id":10448,"date":"2016-11-03T17:07:05","date_gmt":"2016-11-03T17:07:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=10448"},"modified":"2016-11-03T17:07:05","modified_gmt":"2016-11-03T17:07:05","slug":"subtle-blacklisting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=10448","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Subtle blacklisting&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>The failure of a construction company to recognise the elected officials of workers on Europe&#8217;s largest rail infrastructure project\u00c2\u00a0in central London has been branded \u00e2\u20ac\u0098a subtle form of blacklisting\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 by Unite.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unite is angry that bosses at Laing O\u00e2\u20ac\u2122Rourke are not recognising the election of shop steward Terry Wilson and health &amp; safety rep Martyn Prue who are\u00c2\u00a0electricians working at the Crossrail Tottenham Court Road project.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unite argues that that the company\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s stance contravenes the Trade Union and Labour Relations Act which permits the free election of union reps &#8211; and failure to do so is a form of\u00c2\u00a0the blacklisting that has plagued the construction industry for years.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bOur members are furious that basic trade union freedoms, such as the election of union reps, are being attacked by Laing O\u00e2\u20ac\u2122Rourke,&#8221; said Unite regional officer Guy Langston.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThis particular company has always taken a hard line stance about Unite organising workers on its construction sites which is a democratic right enshrined in law &#8211; and what is happening at Tottenham Court Road is the latest manifestation of this company\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s attitude to its hardworking workforce.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWhen you can\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t even have a health &amp; safety rep recognised \u00e2\u20ac\u201c and construction sites are very dangerous places \u00e2\u20ac\u201c it puts the company in a very poor light when it comes to good employment relations practice,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWhat we are seeing here is a subtle form of blacklisting and we call on the management to rescind its decision not to recognise our democratically-elected reps.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bIt also against Crossrail\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s labour relations\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 policy which all the Tier 1 contractors, including Laing O&#8217;Rourke, have agreed to in working on the Crossrail project,&#8221;
