{"id":10697,"date":"2016-11-29T13:08:56","date_gmt":"2016-11-29T13:08:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=10697"},"modified":"2016-11-29T16:10:32","modified_gmt":"2016-11-29T16:10:32","slug":"unity-not-division","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=10697","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Unity not division&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>Last week the right-wing terrorist who murdered Labour MP Jo Cox was given a whole life sentence.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>White supremacist Thomas Mair stabbed and shot Cox in Birstall, a town in West Yorkshire that was part of her Batley and Spen constituency, on June 16 during the run up to the <a href=\"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/tag\/eu-referendum\/\">EU referendum<\/a>. During the attack Mair, who resented immigration, said \u00e2\u20ac\u015bthis is for Britain\u00e2\u20ac\u0165, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bkeep Britain independent\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 and \u00e2\u20ac\u015bBritain first\u00e2\u20ac\u0165, the court was told.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Although privately prosecutors acknowledged that the highly-wrought atmosphere during the EU referendum campaign was certain to have been a factor in Mair\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s decision to murder Cox, they did not mention it in court because jurors were asked to consider whether Mair committed the murder and not about his possible motivations.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Cox, the mother of two young children, was a respected MP renowned for her compassion and dedication to equal rights and social justice. During the trial it emerged that while Cox was being shot and stabbed she told her staff to \u00e2\u20ac\u015bget away, let him hurt me, not you\u00e2\u20ac\u0165.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Addressing the court after the verdict was announced, Cox\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s husband, Brendan described the 41-year-old\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s killing as a \u00e2\u20ac\u015bpolitical act, an act of terrorism\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 that had failed in its purpose.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>He said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bJo is no longer with us, but her love, her example and her values live on. For the rest of our lives we will not lament how unlucky we were to have her taken from us, but how unbelievably lucky we were to have her in our lives for so long.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>More in common<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>After Cox\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s murder the anti-racism organisation Hope Not Hate launched the \u00e2\u20ac\u015b<a href=\"http:\/\/www.hopenothate.org.uk\/more-in-common\/\">More in Common<\/a>\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 campaign &#8211; named after Cox\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s maiden speech to parliament &#8211; to help tackle the <a href=\"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/hate-crime-on-the-rise\/\">shocking rise in hate crime<\/a> that arose after the Brexit vote.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Hope Not Hate chief executive, Nick Lowles, said the rise in hate crimes did not reflect an increase in the number of active racists in Britain, but rather that the inflammatory rhetoric used during the debate had emboldened those racists to act and express themselves publicly.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This was reflected in the more than 50,000 celebratory tweets sent in the month after Cox\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s murder. The tweets, which came from 25,000 separate accounts, used words such as \u00e2\u20ac\u015bhero\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 and \u00e2\u20ac\u015bpatriot\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 to describe Mair and \u00e2\u20ac\u015btraitor\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 to describe Cox, according to a report conducted by Imran Awan from Birmingham City University and Nottingham Trent University\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Irene Zempi.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The report\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s authors said there was a link between racist and hateful digital rhetoric and on street hate crime, with online hate preachers spurred on by \u00e2\u20ac\u015btrigger\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 events such as the EU referendum.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>As well as calling for social media companies to do more to police online hate speech, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/2016\/nov\/26\/jo-coxs-was-followed-by-50000-tweets-celebrating-her-death\">Lowles said<\/a>, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bMair acted alone but he was inspired by over 30 years of reading Nazi propaganda. Clearly there were those on social media and other digital platforms who sought to exploit and profit from his disgusting actions, and the tensions also arising from the referendum process, to spread their vile beliefs.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In the face of rising extreme right-wing actions and speech &#8211; seen not just in Britain but also in the movements surrounding Marine Le Pen in France and Donald Trump in America &#8211; it is more important than ever that trade unionists support efforts to counter hate and promote equality for all, said Unite assistant general secretary Diana Holland.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>That\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s why Unite is backing Labour\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.labour.org.uk\/pages\/the-jo-cox-women-in-leadership-programme\">Jo Cox Women in Leadership<\/a> programme, set to train the next generation of women leaders who will carry forward the progressive and inclusive values so dearly held by the late Batley and Spen MP.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Holland said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bAs trade unionists our message is clear: We want unity not devision, solidarity not hatred and equality not discrimination. We all need to pledge our continuing opposition to all those forces that seek to scapegoat, blame and divide.
