Staff at UPS Parcels in central London will strike for two days next week, which will disrupt the firm\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s deliveries in the run-up to Christmas, over alleged bullying, harassment and racism.<\/p>\n

The 140 workers, members of Unite, at UPS\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 Camden depot will strike for 24 hours on Wednesday (December 7) and Friday (December 9); both actions starting just past midnight. The workers voted by 85 per cent in favour of strike action.<\/p>\n

The union said that there was a feeling of d\u0102\u00a9j\u0102\u00a0 vu about this dispute similar to the one that dogged the depot – the biggest UPS depot in Europe – in late 2013.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThis dispute centres on harassment, bullying and racism,” said Unite regional officer Onay Kasab.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe drivers are forced to work overtime so that they can finish their deliveries. If they refuse or fail\u00c2\u00a0to finish deliveries, they are disciplined.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThis leads to drivers working well beyond their typical 5pm finish time and the drivers feel forced to rush and perhaps drive faster than they should,” he added.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThere is a harsh disciplinary process when drivers have accidents, but, ironically, accidents are more likely to happen because of the continual pressure placed on them.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe management plays fast-and-loose with the English language as it claims that accidents are seen as avoidable i.e. deliberate – when the meaning of the word \u00e2\u20ac\u0098accident\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 is \u00e2\u20ac\u0098an undesirable, incidental and unplanned event\u00e2\u20ac\u2122. No one has an accident on purpose.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThose who load the vans in the warehouse complain of racism and bullying, unfair treatment and a failure to see workers as human beings,” Kasab explained.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThere is a palpable sense of d\u0102\u00a9j\u0102\u00a0 vu about this dispute, as three years ago we had a dispute with UPS at this depot on almost the same issues.<\/p>\n
