{"id":10755,"date":"2016-12-06T15:48:02","date_gmt":"2016-12-06T15:48:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=10755"},"modified":"2016-12-06T15:48:02","modified_gmt":"2016-12-06T15:48:02","slug":"passenger-safety-threat","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=10755","title":{"rendered":"Passenger safety threat"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>Plans to strip Network Rail of complete control of England&#8217;s railway tracks are a retrograde step that raises the spectre of the Hatfield train crash in 2000 which happened under the watch of the privately-owned Railtrack.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unite said that the plans being outlined by transport secretary\u00c2\u00a0Chris Grayling today (December 6) were \u00e2\u20ac\u0098a recipe for further fragmentation of the UK\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s rail system with adverse implications for passenger safety\u00e2\u20ac\u2122.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Chris Grayling wants the publicly-owned Network Rail to share its responsibility for running the tracks with the private train operating companies.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bPoliticians, such as Chris Grayling, have short memories and have conveniently forgotten the Hatfield rail crash in October 2000 when four people were killed and more than 70 injured which happened under the aegis of privately- owned Railtrack,&#8221; said Unite regional officer Hugh Roberts.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bSince Network Rail took over the infrastructure and maintenance of the rail system, safety has greatly improved \u00e2\u20ac\u201c so there is a big question mark as to why Chris Grayling is taking this retrograde step by wishing to involve private train operating companies.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unite national officer for the rail industry Tony Murphy added, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bUnite does not believe that privatisation dogma should trump passenger safety, especially at a time when public opinion is increasingly in favour of rail re-nationalisation.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bAs recently as January this year, a poll by pressure group Action for Rail revealed that 62 per cent of people favoured the public ownership of the train operating companies,&#8221; he noted.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bIt should not be forgotten that \u00e2\u20ac\u0098failing\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 Grayling was the minister who brought chaos to the prison system when he was justice secretary \u00e2\u20ac\u201c he now intends an encore at the Department of Transport.
