{"id":10831,"date":"2016-12-14T10:43:36","date_gmt":"2016-12-14T10:43:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=10831"},"modified":"2016-12-14T15:49:00","modified_gmt":"2016-12-14T15:49:00","slug":"queens-grocer-staff-tips-scrooge-shame","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=10831","title":{"rendered":"Queen&#8217;s grocer staff tips &#8216;Scrooge&#8217; shame"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>Fair tips campaigners will target the Queen\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s grocer, Fortnum and Mason tomorrow (December 15) over its Scrooge-like raid on staff wages and service charge payments which has left staff seriously short-changed.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A fixture in Piccadilly since 1707, the luxury grocer stands accused of operating a tipping policy shrouded in secrecy with staff and customers unaware of how much of the 12.5 per cent service charge it automatically adds to diners&#8217; bills it pockets for itself and what share is given to staff.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unite, which has been campaigning for fair tips in the hospitality industry for nearly a decade, is calling on Fortnum and Mason to \u00e2\u20ac\u0098come clean\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 and tell staff that its new tronc scheme \u00e2\u20ac\u201c the electronic pooling of tips and service charge for distribution \u00e2\u20ac\u201c will leave them worse off.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Pay cut<\/strong> <\/em><\/p>\n<p>Staff working in any one of the store\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s four restaurants, where afternoon tea costs \u00c2\u014146 per person, have been told they must accept a cut in pay to the government\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s so-called national living wage of just \u00c2\u01417.20 an hour to get a tiny share of the service charge which barely covers the loss in their hourly rate.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Contrary to the union\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s repeated calls for tronc systems to be run by \u00e2\u20ac\u0098staff for staff\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 without any undue influence from employers, Fortnum and Mason has appointed an outside consultant, a former tax inspector as tronc master, giving him sole discretion over the scheme\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s operation.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The protest comes as Unite welcomes the progress made in developing a jointly endorsed set of guidelines with the employer\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s association, the Association of Licensed Multiple Retailers (AMLR) which will ensure greater fairness and transparency around tipping and the distribution of tips.<br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u015bFortnum and Mason bosses are treating its loyal and hardworking staff with utter contempt.
