{"id":11032,"date":"2017-01-11T17:16:30","date_gmt":"2017-01-11T17:16:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=11032"},"modified":"2017-01-12T14:12:32","modified_gmt":"2017-01-12T14:12:32","slug":"fantastic-ba-strike-support","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=11032","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Fantastic&#8217; BA strike support"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>Unite hailed support for a 48-hour strike by British Airways\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 \u00e2\u20ac\u0098mixed fleet\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 cabin crew as \u00e2\u20ac\u0098fantastic\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 today (January 11).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\nIt has emerged that the stoppage, which started yesterday (January 10), has led to British Airways cancelling at least 52 flights today, taking the total number of cancellations to and from Heathrow during the 48 hour strike to around 100.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\nIt coincides with today\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s roll-out of the new M&amp;S food range on British Airways\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 short haul flights following the withdrawal of inclusive in-flight meals. It will see \u00e2\u20ac\u0098mixed fleet\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 cabin crew operating out of Heathrow selling the same food, but being paid a basic starting salary which is up to \u00c2\u01416,000 less than customer assistants in M&amp;S Greater London stores when they get their pay rise in April.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\nEarlier in the day, Unite members working as cabin crew for British Airways\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 \u00e2\u20ac\u0098mixed fleet\u00e2\u20ac\u2122, handed in a letter to Marks &amp; Spencer headquarters asking the retailer to call upon British Airways to stop paying poverty wages to sell M&amp;S food.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bSupport for the strike from cabin crew and the public has been fantastic. \u00e2\u20ac\u0098Mixed fleet\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 cabin crew have shown a determination and demonstrated to British Airways that they will not melt away or submit to the airline\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s confrontational tactics,&#8221; said Unite national officer Oliver Richardson.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u015bBritish Airways needs to get its head out of the sand and realise that this is a group of workers who are not afraid to take further strike action in their fight to be paid a decent wage,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe urge British Airways to engage with Unite to meaningfully address levels of poverty pay which are causing financial worry and distress to the people who make this airline hugely profitable.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\nSince 2010 all British Airways new cabin crew employees join what is called \u00e2\u20ac\u0098mixed fleet\u00e2\u20ac\u2122, where despite promises that pay would be 10 per cent above the market rate, basic pay starts at just \u00c2\u014112,192 with \u00c2\u01413 an hour flying pay.
