{"id":11063,"date":"2017-01-12T17:07:29","date_gmt":"2017-01-12T17:07:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=11063"},"modified":"2017-01-13T13:10:35","modified_gmt":"2017-01-13T13:10:35","slug":"members-fight-pay-justice","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=11063","title":{"rendered":"Members fight on for pay justice"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>British Airways\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 \u00e2\u20ac\u0098mixed fleet\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 cabin crew working on long and short haul flights out of Heathrow Airport will be taking part in a three day strike next week in their dispute over poverty pay, Unite announced today (January 12).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\nThe second stoppage running for 72 hours starts at just past midnight\u00c2\u00a0on Thursday, January 19, \u00c2\u00a0and follows this week\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s strongly supported two day strike which led to the cancellation of scores of flights by British Airways.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\nWarning of continuing and deepening anger, Unite called on British Airways to drop its confrontational stance and start listening to \u00e2\u20ac\u0098mixed fleet\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 cabin crew about their legitimate concerns over pay.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\nLow levels of pay at the UK\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s national carrier are forcing \u00e2\u20ac\u0098mixed fleet\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 cabin crew to take second jobs to make ends meet or turn up to work unfit because they can&#8217;t afford to take the day off sick.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bBritish Airways should be under no illusion about our members\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 determination to secure a settlement that addresses their concerns over poverty pay,&#8221; \u00c2\u00a0said Unite national officer Oliver Richardson.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThey work tirelessly to serve and keep passengers safe, while contributing massively to the success of British Airways and the billions of pounds in profits it makes.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u015bYet rather than pay them a decent wage for playing a key part in this success, British Airways refuses to talk meaningfully about their legitimate concerns over poverty pay,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u015bSeeking to squeeze ever more from cabin crew and making passengers pay for services which were once complementary is a sad state of affairs for an airline which once described itself as the \u00e2\u20ac\u0098world\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s favourite\u00e2\u20ac\u2122.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe would urge British Airways to avoid the inconvenience and disruption of industrial action by meaningfully addressing levels of poverty pay which are causing financial worry and distress to \u00e2\u20ac\u0098mixed fleet\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 cabin crew.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\nOver 800 cabin crew from British Airways\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 \u00e2\u20ac\u0098mixed fleet\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 have joined Unite since the start of the dispute over poverty pay, taking the union\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s membership to over 2,900.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\nSince 2010, all British Airways new cabin crew employees join what is called \u00e2\u20ac\u0098mixed fleet\u00e2\u20ac\u2122, where despite promises that pay would be 10 per cent above the market rate, basic pay starts at just \u00c2\u014112,192 with \u00c2\u01413 an hour flying pay.
