{"id":11269,"date":"2017-01-27T15:44:02","date_gmt":"2017-01-27T15:44:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=11269"},"modified":"2017-01-27T15:44:02","modified_gmt":"2017-01-27T15:44:02","slug":"hebdens-hub","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=11269","title":{"rendered":"Hebden\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s hub!"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>Unite Community volunteers in West Yorkshire have come to the aid of a flood-hit Trades Club in the town of Hebden Bridge.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Around 10 volunteers from across the region have been travelling to the village in recent weeks to renovate the ground floor of the historic trades club, which was devastated by the 2015 floods.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The club, now owned by the Labour Party, was built in 1924 by subscriptions from trade union members in the textile industry, who each bought a brick for its construction.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Although the community hall and Labour Party rooms downstairs were wrecked, the renowned non-profit <a href=\"http:\/\/thetradesclub.com\/\">social club and music venue<\/a> upstairs survived the deluge and became a hub for the town\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s flood victims.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11279\" src=\"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/hebden-bridge-2-1.jpg\" alt=\"hebden bridge 2\" width=\"890\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/hebden-bridge-2-1.jpg 890w, https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/hebden-bridge-2-1-300x162.jpg 300w, https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/hebden-bridge-2-1-768x414.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 890px) 100vw, 890px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>After hearing that the insurance pay-out to rebuild the club will not cover the price of turning the premises into a modern flood resilient \u00c2\u00a0venue with amenities for <a href=\"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/tag\/disabled\/\">disabled people<\/a>, Unite community members, along with other local volunteers, stepped in to help.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unite community member Matt Keithley, from Morley, was one of those who spent the last two weekends at the club lugging debris into skips outside, with the volunteers returning to finish the job this weekend.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bIt\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s been a big job. There was about 12 tonnes of rubbish to come out. We were lucky there were a few lads with strong backs to get it all cleared,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 said the 40-year-old musician, who is planning to organise gigs with bands from Leeds to raise money for the club.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-11280\" src=\"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/hebden-bridge-1-1-804x1024.jpg\" alt=\"hebden bridge 1\" width=\"640\" height=\"815\" srcset=\"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/hebden-bridge-1-1-804x1024.jpg 804w, https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/hebden-bridge-1-1-235x300.jpg 235w, https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/hebden-bridge-1-1-768x979.jpg 768w, https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/hebden-bridge-1-1.jpg 890w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Camaraderie<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bI like the camaraderie and working with people who have a like mind. At the end of the day when you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re all in a room together and you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve got a job to be done, it gets done.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/tag\/unite-community\/\">Unite Community<\/a> member Roger O\u00e2\u20ac\u2122Doherty, who is 65 but \u00e2\u20ac\u015bcan still swing a hammer\u00e2\u20ac\u0165, travelled from nearby Mytholmroyd to get stuck in.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bI think we\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re all very pleased with the results. We saved quite a bit of money, because any company going in there would have had to start with the demolition, which would have cost a fortune,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 he said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThere\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s more to be done and we\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ll carry on doing what we can. It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s a terrific way of making links with other people and doing something that\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s a little bit different.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11282\" src=\"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/hebden-bridge-3.jpg\" alt=\"hebden bridge 3\" width=\"890\" height=\"483\" srcset=\"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/hebden-bridge-3.jpg 890w, https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/hebden-bridge-3-300x163.jpg 300w, https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/hebden-bridge-3-768x417.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 890px) 100vw, 890px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Local Labour councillor Allison Miles, who helped organise the project, said those links will continue into the future.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>She said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe want to restore the building for full use so it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ll be a really good space for the community and the arts. But the main thing is, we want to restore the trade union links to the building because it was built by the trade unions in the first place and that\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s kind of been lost.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unite Community regional coordinator John Coan said the renovation is just one of a number of initiatives in the area.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>He said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re planing on building a branch in that part of the world. Along with the benefit work we do at Halifax Job Centre and the libraries campaign in Huddersfield, it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s another concrete example that shows what Unite Community does.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Organisers hope to raise \u00c2\u0141100,000 to get the club up and running.
