{"id":11616,"date":"2017-02-28T16:16:49","date_gmt":"2017-02-28T16:16:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=11616"},"modified":"2017-03-01T12:09:39","modified_gmt":"2017-03-01T12:09:39","slug":"steady-brexit-nerves-call","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=11616","title":{"rendered":"Steady Brexit nerves call"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>With Nissan today (February 28) warning MPs that it is keeping its commitment to the UK under review, despite assurances it may have been offered by the government, Unite general secretary Len McCluskey has again urged the prime minister to commit to existing trade arrangements.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>McCluskey has said that the only way to steady Brexit nerves in manufacturing, including the automotive sector, is to make it clear that the UK will retain access to the single market and membership of the customs union.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>His remarks follow the appearance before the Commons International Trade Committee of Nissan\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s vice-president Colin Lawther, who indicated that the company\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s commitment to the UK would depend on what trade arrangements are put in place after Brexit. Mr Lawther warned too, that the prospect of a 10 per cent tariff on exports to the EU under WTO rules would be \u00e2\u20ac\u015bdisastrous.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Nissan employs 7,000 people at its Sunderland plant.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Commenting Len McCluskey said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bNissan\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s comments today to the select committee are a depressing reminder of the problems that the government\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s stubborn refusal to commit to our trading arrangements is causing.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bClearly, whatever secret assurances the government offered, they cannot match the arrangements presently in place.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bUK manufacturing needs to hear loud and clear that the UK will retain access to the single market and the customs union, just as tens of thousands of UK people working in aerospace, defence, the automotive sector and across manufacturing need to hear the same,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe prime minister is wrong to pose this as a choice between borders and jobs.\u00c2\u00a0Both can be secured, it is a matter of political will.
