{"id":11627,"date":"2017-03-01T15:42:29","date_gmt":"2017-03-01T15:42:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=11627"},"modified":"2017-03-02T14:45:09","modified_gmt":"2017-03-02T14:45:09","slug":"with-all-our-might","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=11627","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;With all our might&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>Unite general secretary Len McCluskey has vowed that Unite will fight to secure a viable future for the Ford Bridgend plant \u00e2\u20ac\u201c with \u00e2\u20ac\u0098all its might\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 \u00e2\u20ac\u201c as he meets with workers today (March 1) at the site in Wales.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The pledge comes after Ford bosses outlined plans to scale back production over the next five years \u00e2\u20ac\u201c resulting in the potential loss of over 1,100 jobs.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Accusing Ford bosses of keeping the workforce in the dark for the last 18 months, Unite called on the company to provide cast iron legal guarantees over the plant\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s long term future.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>McCluskey\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s visit comes as documents were <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-wales-south-east-wales-39123982\">leaked to the BBC today<\/a> showing that Ford is projecting reducing 1,160 workers at the plant by 2021, leaving 600 workers.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>At the meeting with Ford today, involving Unite general secretary Len McCluskey, Unite Wales secretary Andy Richards, Unite shop stewards and Ford management, it was confirmed that the automaker does not have a replacement business plan for the Jaguar engine.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Production will cease for the Jaguar engine at Bridgend by 2020. The current Sigma engine production of 511,000 a year is set to be replaced by the Dragon engine of which Unite understands Ford is planning to produce 125,000 a year.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Following the meeting McCluskey reiterated the workforce\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s understandable anger.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Loyal workforce <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>He said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bFord workers at Bridgend have every right to feel angry over the company\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s behaviour. This loyal workforce and their union have been kept in the dark over recent months.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bBut the focus now has to be saving these jobs.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bOver the coming days we will be consulting our members on our next steps, but they can be assured that Unite will use all its might to fight for the future of Bridgend.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe will not allow Ford to walk away from its responsibilities. Ford must give this plant a chance and work with Unite to secure a better future.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe will be seeking legally binding guarantees to secure future production at the plant as well as exploring how Bridgend\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s production capacity can be fully utilised through the introduction of new lines.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Brexit factor <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s no doubt that Brexit is a clear factor here.
