{"id":11915,"date":"2017-03-29T16:22:51","date_gmt":"2017-03-29T15:22:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=11915"},"modified":"2017-03-30T15:41:05","modified_gmt":"2017-03-30T14:41:05","slug":"no-hard-brexit-plea","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=11915","title":{"rendered":"\u00e2\u20ac\u0098No hard Brexit\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 plea"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>Trade union leaders and the Labour party called on Theresa May to ensure that <a href=\"http:\/\/unitebrexitcheck.org\/\">Brexit<\/a> does not hurt ordinary people, as she triggered the two-year negotiations to leave the EU today.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A letter signed by the prime minister was hand-delivered to European council president, Donald Tusk, at 12.30pm this afternoon (March 29), beginning a process that will sever the UK\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s 44-year-old relationship with the European project.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Addressing MP\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s in the House of Commons, May pledged to represent all UK citizens during the negotiations.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>She said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bI have set out a clear and ambitious plan for the negotiations ahead. It is a plan for a new deep and special partnership between Britain and the European Union.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Despite a softening of language \u00e2\u20ac\u201c May has threatened to lower corporation tax to attract business away from Europe if negotiations do not go well and has stated that \u00e2\u20ac\u015b<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/2017\/jan\/17\/prime-minister-vows-to-put-final-brexit-deal-before-parliament\">no deal is better than a bad deal<\/a>\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 \u00e2\u20ac\u201c Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said the Conservatives could not be trusted over Brexit.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>\u00e2\u20ac\u0098Listen, consult and represent\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 call <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>He said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bIf the prime minister is to unite this country, as she says she aims to do, the government needs to listen, consult and represent the whole country, not just the hard-line Tory ideologues on her own benches.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe Conservatives want to use Brexit to turn our country into a low wage tax haven. Labour is determined to invest in a high skill, high tech, high wage future, to rebuild and transform Britain, so no one and no community is left behind.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe direction the prime minister is threatening to take this country is both reckless and damaging and Labour will not give this government a free hand to use Brexit to attack rights and protections, cut services and create a tax dodgers\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 paradise.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unite general secretary, Len McCluskey, called on the government to end the <a href=\"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/pm-change-brexit-tack-call\/\">uncertainty plaguing Britain\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s economy<\/a> by prioritising single market and custom union access and rescinding the threats it has made in the run up to the negotiations.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>\u00c2\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>McCluskey, said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bFor the jobs and prosperity of the people of this country, the government must make it clear that its priority is to secure maximum access to present day customs and market access arrangements, and that far from treating migrant workers as bargaining chips, their worth to our economy is understood and will be safeguarded.\u00c2\u00a0We urge them to make it abundantly clear: there will be no \u00e2\u20ac\u0098hard\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 Brexit.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/tag\/tuc\">TUC<\/a> said that the government must seek to protect jobs and workers\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 rights during the negotiations.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe best deal will guarantee that hardworking Brits keep their hard-won rights at work \u00e2\u20ac\u201d and that in the years to come they won\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t miss out on protections that Dutch, Spanish and German workers get,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 TUC general secretary Frances O\u00e2\u20ac\u2122Grady.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe best deal has to protect good jobs, with decent wages, by keeping our trade free from tariffs and unnecessary bureaucracy.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>And it has to end the disgraceful uncertainty for workers from other EU nations who\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve made the UK their home.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>O\u00e2\u20ac\u2122Grady added, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe Brexit deal will define Britain\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s future for a generation. We owe it to ourselves and our children to take the time needed to get it right.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Contradictory <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The triggering of Article 50 was also marked by in-fighting and contradictory statements from within the top ranks of the Tory party.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Yesterday, Lord Heseltine blasted Theresa May\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s \u00e2\u20ac\u015bno deal is better than a bad deal\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 position, equating it to \u00e2\u20ac\u015bleaving port in the teeth of the storm.
