Labour will increase the minimum wage to \u00c2\u014110 if the party wins the 2020 general election, Jeremy Corbyn said today (April 11).<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The Labour leader promised \u00e2\u20ac\u015ba real living wage\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 of \u00e2\u20ac\u015bat least\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 \u00c2\u014110 per hour in 2020 if the party gains power.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Currently the national minimum wage is \u00c2\u01417.50 and is expected to rise to \u00c2\u01418.75 by 2020<\/a> under the government\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s so-called \u00e2\u20ac\u015bliving wage\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 policy.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Labour\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s pledge, first announced<\/a> at the party\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s conference last year, also includes workers aged 21 to 24, who at present are not entitled to the full minimum wage.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Speaking in Luton, Corbyn said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe government\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s rebranding of the minimum wage to the national living wage hasn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t dealt with the real problems of low pay and rising cost of living.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThat\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s why Labour will raise the legal minimum wage for all to at least \u00c2\u014110 an hour by 2020, giving more than 5.5m people a pay rise in the process.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bLabour\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s real living wage will immediately boost the incomes and opportunities of more than 20 per cent of the workforce, especially in sectors such as retail, care and hospitality.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe know that where work pays, living standards rise and reliance on benefits falls. This is the right thing to do, and a Labour government will be committed to rebalancing our economy so that no one and no community are left behind.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n

Welcomed<\/strong> <\/em><\/p>\n

TUC general secretary, Francis O\u00e2\u20ac\u2122Grady, welcomed the announcement and called on the government to raise the minimum wage to \u00c2\u014110 \u00e2\u20ac\u015bas soon as possible\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 to head off a deepening cost of living<\/a> crisis.<\/p>\n

She said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bWith rising inflation and slower wage growth, a new living standards crisis is on the horizon.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe minimum wage needs a serious boost in the coming years, and the TUC believes it should reach \u00c2\u014110 an hour as soon as possible. This should be for all workers, instead of the current raw deal that gives young workers a lower rate.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Unite assistant general secretary, Steve Turner, said raising the minimum wage<\/a> to \u00c2\u014110 would be a good first step in helping working people maintain a decent quality of life, but that more action is also needed.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWorkers have suffered the longest squeeze in living standards in recorded history in recent years, thanks to the actions of this government and its predecessor,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 Turner said.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bAn increase\u00c2\u00a0in the minimum wage to \u00c2\u014110 would benefit those on the lowest wages and is\u00c2\u00a0one of a number of measures that need to be enacted to prevent the economy and peoples\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 living standards from plummeting. These include ending the freeze on working age benefits and\u00c2\u00a0the real cuts to\u00c2\u00a0public sector pay.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bMost importantly of all, we need public investment to create jobs and stimulate the economy and an end to the Tories\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 counter-productive reign of austerity<\/a>.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n
