Labour\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Brexit plan has been unveiled during a general election campaign speech by Sir Keir Starmer.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The shadow Brexit secretary said yesterday (April 25) a Labour government would axe Theresa May\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s \u00e2\u20ac\u015brigid and reckless\u00e2\u20ac\u0165\u00c2\u00a0Brexit strategy\u00c2\u00a0in favour of a more constructive approach that would prioritise the economy and not close the door on the single market, the customs union or participation in EU agencies.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Labour\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s plan includes guaranteeing the rights of Britain\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s 3m EU citizens without waiting for a reciprocal agreement for UK residents in Europe. Starmer said this would boost good will during the negotiations.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Starmer pledged that MPs under a Labour government would have the power to send the prime minister back to the negotiating table if they voted against a final deal, rather than having a choice between accepting a deal or crashing out onto\u00c2\u00a0World Trade Organisation\u00c2\u00a0rules.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

He said that Labour believed that \u00e2\u20ac\u015bno deal with the EU is the worst possible outcome\u00e2\u20ac\u0165.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

In his first speech of the election campaign, Starmer also said Labour would end the free movement of people between Europe and the UK after Brexit.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

He said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe have to listen to what people are telling us about immigration.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Instead there would be a \u00e2\u20ac\u015bmanaged migration\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 system, said Starmer, who emphasised that Labour\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s top priority would be economic growth.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

He blasted the prime minister\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s \u00e2\u20ac\u015brigid\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 Brexit strategy and said that her emphasis on immigration above all else meant she has \u00e2\u20ac\u015bruled out option after option\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 despite the negotiations not having yet started.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe recognise that immigration rules will have to change as we exit the EU, but we do not believe that immigration should be the overarching priority\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6 We don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t accept that immigration should be the only red line,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 Starmer said.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bOur white paper will make clear that jobs and the economy are Labour\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s priority throughout \u00e2\u20ac\u201c whereas the Conservatives are willing to put this at risk. It is extraordinary that we have a prime minister who has given up on the single market and the customs union even before negotiations have begun.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n

Starmer also vowed to replace the Tories\u00e2\u20ac\u2122\u00c2\u00a0Great Repeal Bill, which will give the government the power to change EU laws without parliamentary oversight, with an EU Rights and Protections Bill that will project workers\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 rights.<\/p>\n

He said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe do not believe that leaving the EU means severing our ties with Europe. We do not believe that Brexit means weakening workers\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 rights and environmental protections or slashing corporate tax rates.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n

Unite assistant general secretary Tony Burke welcomed Labour\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Brexit strategy.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bAt last we\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re being presented with a plan to leave the EU that puts defending jobs and the economy first,” he said.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bPeople may have voted to leave the EU but they didn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t vote to be poorer or to lose their jobs and have their living standards attacked.\u00c2\u00a0Unfortunately that\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s exactly what Theresa May will do by pursuing a hard Brexit and hoodwinking the public into believing she is able to secure a good deal.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe British people have a choice: a Labour government committed to retaining a working relationship with the EU, remaining in the single market and customs union; getting commitments to investment and protecting employment rights – and improving the lives of ordinary people.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe Conservative government is in the hands of right-wing Brextremists – set on damaging trade, severing foreign ties and turning Britain into a deregulated tax-haven.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n
