{"id":12263,"date":"2017-05-03T10:32:30","date_gmt":"2017-05-03T09:32:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=12263"},"modified":"2017-05-03T17:03:39","modified_gmt":"2017-05-03T16:03:39","slug":"safety-not-union-busting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=12263","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Safety, not union-busting&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>Unite the union on Tuesday (May 2) said that the gas leak at the Grangemouth petrochemical reaffirms the need for the site\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s owners\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 INEOS to work constructively on its industrial and community relations.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unite, Scotland\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s biggest union, said that today\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s incident has to convince INEOS that they must work with the skilled union members to safeguard public and worker safety at the plant, a cornerstone of the Scottish economy.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>INEOS has previously come under scrutiny by the Health and Safety Executive which criticised the company\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s health and safety record.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Despite the safety body\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s concerns and today\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s leak, INEOS has taken steps to `derecognise\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 the union in the chemical and infrastructure sections of the Grangemouth plants meaning, among other things, that the union\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s expertise in health and safety matters would be lost. Workers at the Petroineos oil refinery are not affected.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe leak reported at INEOS Grangemouth is a very concerning development,&#8221; said Unite Scottish secretary, Pat Rafferty. &#8220;Unite has written to the company requesting an urgent meeting in order to ascertain the cause of the leak.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe have long been concerned that private ownership of vital commodities such as those produced at Grangemouth is inappropriate,&#8221; he added. &#8220;I live locally and know myself how important the safety of the site is to the community.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThat is why we have always said to the INEOS management that the upkeep of the site is best done with us all working to protect the workforce and the public.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bI urge the managers now to accept that cooperation is the best policy when it comes to ensuring that Grangemouth stays safe, and drop this damaging and needless effort to break the union,&#8221; Rafferty urged. &#8220;The public need to have confidence that this site is being run on cooperation, not confrontation.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unite assistant general secretary Howard Beckett added, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bINEOS must now think again about its plans to derecognise Unite.
