{"id":12286,"date":"2017-05-04T16:23:54","date_gmt":"2017-05-04T15:23:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=12286"},"modified":"2017-05-09T16:12:24","modified_gmt":"2017-05-09T15:12:24","slug":"brexit-rights-bonfire","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=12286","title":{"rendered":"Brexit rights bonfire?"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>A majority of employers do not want a \u00e2\u20ac\u015bBrexit bonfire\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 of employment rights and are in favour of parental leave, working time regulations and the minimum wage, a major new survey has found.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>More than 500 organisations gave their support to 28 areas of employment law, including unfair dismissal legislation and rights for agency workers.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The results contradict the views of Tory Brexiteers, such as international trade minister Liam Fox, who has said \u00e2\u20ac\u015bit is too difficult to hire and fire\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 and that \u00e2\u20ac\u015bit is intellectually unsustainable to believe that workplace rights should remain untouchable.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cipd.co.uk\/knowledge\/fundamentals\/emp-law\/about\/employment-regulations-report\">survey<\/a> \u00e2\u20ac\u201c conducted by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) and the Lewis Silkin employment law firm \u00e2\u20ac\u201c asked employers whether they think the UK\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s employment rights, including <a href=\"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/will-brexit-affect-workers-rights\/\">EU originated legislation<\/a>, are necessary or not.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>More than 90 per cent of employers asked support unfair dismissal laws, 87 percent back the minimum wage, 82 percent are in favour of parental rights, while 74 percent believe working time regulations are needed and 75 percent want agency worker laws.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>CIPD employment adviser, Rachel Suff, said claims that EU \u00e2\u20ac\u015bred tape\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 is holding back businesses were simply not true.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWhile much has been written about the need to roll back important aspects of our employment law framework to free businesses of red tape, it is clear that businesses themselves recognise the value of employment protection,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 said Suff.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Many of these regulations exist to protect workers against exploitation, ensure they are paid a fair wage and prevent discrimination in the workplace and can help improve people management practices.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bEven the more controversial aspects of employment law, such as the working time regulations, have broad support from UK businesses.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Prime minister Theresa May has said that all existing employment rights deriving from the EU, including such measures as the working time directive, will be transferred over to UK law using the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unitebrexitcheck.org\/great-repeal-bill-gives-sweeping-powers-govt-change-eu-rights-protections\/\">Great Repeal Bill<\/a>, with the government retaining the right to modify at some later stage.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>However, many are concerned that the Tories will use the so called Henry VIII clauses \u00e2\u20ac\u201c which allow government to change legislation without parliamentary oversight \u00e2\u20ac\u201c contained in the bill to roll back rights.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Suff called for caution over workers\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 rights during Brexit, saying \u00e2\u20ac\u015bit is vital that we don&#8217;t throw the baby out with the bathwater by making sweeping changes to employment legislation that businesses may not want.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unite assistant general secretary for legal, Howard Beckett, said it was vital that whichever government takes power after June 8 ensures that <a href=\"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/tag\/workers-rights\/\">employment rights<\/a> are retained and protected.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe most basic of employment rights have been achieved through membership of the EU. Protection from discrimination in the workplace, the right to be paid during your holidays, rights as to the length of a working week and protection at times of redundancy,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 said Beckett.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThis excellent piece of research confirms that good employers understand the importance of employment rights and that it is only bad employers who would seek a bonfire of employment rights following <a href=\"unitebrexitcheck.org\">Brexit<\/a>.
