{"id":12292,"date":"2017-05-05T14:34:33","date_gmt":"2017-05-05T13:34:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=12292"},"modified":"2017-05-05T14:34:33","modified_gmt":"2017-05-05T13:34:33","slug":"fighting-for-jobs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=12292","title":{"rendered":"Fighting for jobs"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>Unite has called five more days of strike action in the long-running dispute involving the IT giant Fujitsu which could see 1,800 job losses, with many of them being outsourced overseas.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The union reiterated its call today (May 5) for the company to negotiate in a constructive fashion in the wide-ranging dispute over pay, pensions, job security and union recognition.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>To ram home the message that customer service will be badly hit by Fujitsu outsourcing plans, Unite activists demonstrated outside one of the company\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s biggest clients, Sainsbury\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s in Oxford Street, Manchester today. A similar protest was held at Sainsbury\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s headquarters in London yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unite activists will also be protesting\u00c2\u00a0 outside the Regional Business Technology Expo \u00e2\u20ac\u201c another venue for Fujitsu\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s clients &#8211; at London\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Olympia on Monday (May 8)\u00c2\u00a0 between 9am-2pm.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unite also announced five days of new strike action on top of the days already held or to be held; bringing the total to 20.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>There will be a 48 hour stoppage on May 8; a 24-hour strike on May 22; and a 48-hour stoppage on May 25 \u00e2\u20ac\u201c all strikes starting at just past midnight. This is in addition to the already announced 24-hour stoppage commencing at just past midnight on Monday (May 8) and 48-hour strike starting on May 11.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe announcement of five days of new strikes demonstrates the determination of our members to fight for their jobs and employment conditions and our adamant opposition to \u00e2\u20ac\u0098exporting\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 skilled UK jobs abroad,&#8221; said Unite national officer Ian Tonks.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe UK management of Fujitsu is intransigent and refuses to engage with its dedicated and hardworking employees. Our members will continue their fight \u00e2\u20ac\u201c and the fact that 20 days of strike action has or will be held is a mark of their strong resolution.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The workers striking are based at Basingstoke, Belfast, Birmingham, Bracknell, Crewe, Edinburgh, London, Manchester, Stevenage, Wakefield and Warrington.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Last month Unite handed\u00c2\u00a0 in a letter to the ambassador Mr Koji Tsuruoka in London criticising the \u00e2\u20ac\u0098shameful way\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 that the UK management has behaved over the proposed job losses and calling for the envoy to raise this at the \u00e2\u20ac\u0098highest levels\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 both in the UK and Japan.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The dispute centres on pay, pensions, job security and union recognition &#8211; and takes place against a background of Fujitsu\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s plans to axe and offshore 1,800 jobs in the UK.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Fujitsu is highly profitable in the UK, making \u00c2\u014185.6m profit in the last financial year.
