{"id":12331,"date":"2017-05-10T16:26:01","date_gmt":"2017-05-10T15:26:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=12331"},"modified":"2017-05-11T15:11:22","modified_gmt":"2017-05-11T14:11:22","slug":"tories-hit-and-miss-plans","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=12331","title":{"rendered":"Tories\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 \u00e2\u20ac\u0098hit and miss\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 plans"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>Unite has blasted the Tories\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 \u00e2\u20ac\u015bad hoc\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 \u00e2\u20ac\u015bhit and miss\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 industrial strategy, after details of the government\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s deal with Nissan emerged.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>The Times<\/em> obtained a four page letter from Nissan chairman Paul Willcox to business secretary Greg Clark, laying out the firm\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s demands to ensure that Nissan\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Sunderland plant stayed open.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A number of the demands correspond with announcements made by the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (Beis) during the last six months, <em>The Times<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.co.uk\/article\/government-accused-of-bowing-to-nissans-electric-car-demands-87ljk2gp6\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>These include a project highlighted by Willcox to make sure Nissan electric car batteries \u00e2\u20ac\u015bhave a sustainable second life as storage systems in homes and offices\u00e2\u20ac\u0165.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Last month, Innovate UK \u00e2\u20ac\u201c which is overseen by Beis \u00e2\u20ac\u201c announced the government would be investing in \u00e2\u20ac\u015bexploring how old Nissan electric vehicle batteries can be used to store peak electricity from UK homes\u00e2\u20ac\u0165.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/wp-admin\/unitelive.org\/tag\/nissan\">Nissan<\/a> letter also requested that government make it compulsory for large residential developments to install electric car charging points, as well as making councils responsible for ensuring that they are accessible and operational.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Nissan\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s letter stated, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bIt may be helpful to look at the German model: A \u00e2\u201a\u00ac1bn national programme to promote electric vehicles includes \u00e2\u201a\u00ac330m specifically allocated for infrastructure funding.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In October, the government announced grants to support the wider use of hybrid and electric cars \u00e2\u20ac\u201c these included the office for low emission vehicles funding up to 75 per cent of the cost of installing electric car charge points at domestic properties.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Industrial strategy fund <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In April, the business secretary also announced the industrial strategy fund, which will provide \u00c2\u01411bn over four years for six areas, including clean and flexible energy storage, batteries and self-driving cars.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>While welcoming movement to support British manufacturing, Unite assistant general secretary Tony Burke said the Nissan deal belied the government\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s \u00e2\u20ac\u015bhit and miss\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 approach.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bEverything the government does is either hit or miss because it doesn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t have a proper <a href=\"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/tag\/industrial-strategy\/\">industrial strategy<\/a>. There\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s no joined up thinking. Any deals offered to Nissan should be offered to the other car manufacturers as part of a wider vision, which includes urgent action from the government to help bring car component manufacturing \u00e2\u20ac\u201c such as the production of electronic car batteries \u00e2\u20ac\u201c to the UK,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 said Burke.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bTo retain the UK\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s status as a global player in manufacturing there needs to be a radical rethink of what our economy needs. This means the entire manufacturing sector \u00e2\u20ac\u201c from aerospace and shipbuilding to chemicals and pharmaceuticals \u00e2\u20ac\u201c needs to be treated equally.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe Tories ad hoc industrial strategy is not up to the job of reinforcing our foundation industries ahead of <a href=\"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/wp-admin\/unitebrexitcheck.org\">Brexit<\/a>.
