{"id":12346,"date":"2017-05-12T14:54:20","date_gmt":"2017-05-12T13:54:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=12346"},"modified":"2017-05-12T14:54:20","modified_gmt":"2017-05-12T13:54:20","slug":"paltry-accident-fine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=12346","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Paltry&#8217; accident fine"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>Unite has criticised a \u00e2\u20ac\u0098paltry\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 fine imposed on a company for health and safety breaches that led to the permanent impairment of a worker.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>At Dundee Sheriff Court yesterday (May 11), Wallace Roofing and Building pleaded guilty to a number of charges under the Health &amp; Safety at Work Act.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The charges were brought after an incident in September 2011, where a worker was buried alive in a collapsed trench on a site in Fife. He was left with punctured lungs, a broken collarbone, a broken shoulder and numerous broken ribs. The court heard that he had been left with permanent disfigurement and impairment.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The firm was fined just \u00c2\u014114,000.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Each sheriff has to judge the merits of each case, but \u00c2\u014114,000 seems a paltry sum given the nature of what this worker has had to suffer,&#8221; said Unite regional co-ordinating officer Steven Dillon. \u00e2\u20ac\u015bOur thoughts are with him, his friends and his family.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThere is no need for workers to be seriously injured and killed on construction sites. We need to end the culture of complacency and profit-before-people. Every worker deserves to return home at the end of their shift, free from injury and harm.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe rely on the courts to protect workers, and to protect us all.
