{"id":12381,"date":"2017-05-17T16:02:56","date_gmt":"2017-05-17T15:02:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=12381"},"modified":"2017-05-18T16:20:49","modified_gmt":"2017-05-18T15:20:49","slug":"the-power-of-belonging","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=12381","title":{"rendered":"The power of belonging"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p><em>Belonging: the Truth Behind the Headlines<\/em> is an explosive new documentary investigating where real power lies in this country \u00e2\u20ac\u201c and never has a release been more timely than now.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The film, directed by Morag Livingstone in her first feature-length documentary, shines a spotlight on three different industrial disputes over three decades, and how the media, government and big business colluded to suppress human rights and democracy.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In an exclusive UNITElive interview, we speak to Morag, who explains how such collusion \u00e2\u20ac\u201c documented with evidence for the first time \u00e2\u20ac\u201c worked to destroy working families and their communities.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/nm5-zulfBEY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The film, which premieres today (May 17) in London, is told through heart-rending personal stories of those who lived through the Wapping, Royal Mail and Grangemouth disputes and ultimately highlights what the trade union movement gives communities up against the sinister forces of a largely invisible power \u00e2\u20ac\u201c it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s offered a sense of belonging; and of hope.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThat word \u00e2\u20ac\u0098belonging\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 kept coming up,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 Morag notes, explaining why she gave the film that title. \u00e2\u20ac\u015bIt really stuck with me. And then I did about two month\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s research on what belonging means and I found that that\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s what the film is all about \u00e2\u20ac\u201c it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s about being a collective.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In examining three different disputes spanning three successive governments, Morag says that she was shocked to discover the extent to which government and business work in concert against the interests of ordinary people.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>\u00e2\u20ac\u0098Very disturbing\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bPeople sit in a room and make decisions that work against us,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 she notes. \u00e2\u20ac\u015bEven though it is we who pay our taxes, we who do the right thing by working hard \u00e2\u20ac\u201c there are other people sitting in a room making these decisions [not in our interests]. That for me was very disturbing.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Morag highlights how revelations brought to light by the Orgreave and Hillsborough campaigns showed the world how governments and the police lie. But for the first time, <em>Belonging<\/em> goes beyond this and shows how such lies were not accidental, isolated incidents \u00e2\u20ac\u201c after reviewing nearly 300 previously classified documents obtained through freedom of information requests, the film proves that such lies were in fact planned.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Ultimately, Morag is hoping viewers will re-examine some of the assumptions and beliefs they might have about power and the way it operates in the same way that she herself did in the making of the film.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bA lady who I know who is in her late 60s now \u00e2\u20ac\u201c she only used to read the <em>Daily Mail<\/em>,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 Morag recounts. \u00e2\u20ac\u015bAnd in the process of doing this film, she now reads every paper every morning. That\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s what I would like \u00e2\u20ac\u201c I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122d like people to think. We\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re not telling people what to think; we\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re telling people to think again.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Morag says that the film would not have been possible \u00e2\u20ac\u015bwithout trade union support \u00e2\u20ac\u201c particularly Unite the union.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWhile this is not a trade union film and I went into it with an open mind, I can categorically state that the film would not have happened if Unite the union branches, head office \u00e2\u20ac\u201c particularly the communications team \u00e2\u20ac\u201c and staff members as well as union members had not put their trust in me and supported the filming, especially though the filming stage,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 she notes.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Interested in watching the film?
