Theresa May was described as a \u00e2\u20ac\u015bdementia taxing\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 \u00e2\u20ac\u015blunch snatcher\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 today, as she launched a Tory manifesto that would see a continuation of damaging policies for ordinary families and increased tax breaks for big business.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Speaking at the manifesto launch in Halifax, Yorkshire \u00e2\u20ac\u201c where she was met with protests \u00e2\u20ac\u201c May described the Tory plan as \u00e2\u20ac\u015ba detailed programme for government, rooted in the hopes and aspirations of ordinary working people across this land\u00e2\u20ac\u0165.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Unlike Labour\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s \u00e2\u20ac\u015bFor the many not the few<\/a>\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 blueprint, however, the Conservative\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s \u00e2\u20ac\u015bForward together\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 manifesto offered little to working people.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

A Theresa May government would scrap free school dinners for five, six and seven-year-olds and replace them with cheaper breakfasts. This would add \u00c2\u0141650m into school budgets \u00e2\u20ac\u201c money the Tories cut to begin with.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

May promised that pensioners who have assets of less than \u00c2\u0141100,000 would not have to pay for their own care. However, at-home care would become means-tested in the same way as residential care, meaning more people would have to pay.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u0098Dementia tax\u00e2\u20ac\u2122<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

The policy has been dubbed a \u00e2\u20ac\u015bdementia tax\u00e2\u20ac\u0165, with critics pointing out that social care<\/a> costs will continue to hit older people of modest means the hardest.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

In a further attack on older people the Conservatives would mean-test winter fuel payments for the first time as well as ending the triple lock for pensions.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

May said NHS<\/a> spending \u00e2\u20ac\u015bwill rise \u00c2\u01418bn in real terms\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 by 2020 \u00e2\u20ac\u201c a figure that may have already been allocated and that is considered inadequate by NHS bosses.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Meanwhile large companies will receive an extra boost to their bottom-line, with a promised 17p rate of corporation tax \u00e2\u20ac\u201c one of the lowest in the world. There was no mention of whether there will be a national insurance increase.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u0098Betrayed\u00e2\u20ac\u2122<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bMillions of pensioners are betrayed by Theresa May\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s manifesto. She is hitting older people with a classic Nasty Party triple whammy:\u00c2\u00a0 Scrapping the triple lock on pensions, removing the Winter Fuel Allowance and\u00c2\u00a0forcing those who need social care to pay\u00c2\u00a0for it\u00c2\u00a0with their homes. The Conservatives\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 record is one of broken promises and failure.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThey promised to raise living standards, but working families are set to be on average over \u00c2\u01411,400 a year worse off. They promised to improve all standards of NHS care, but A&Es are in crisis. They promised to protect school spending, but schools are facing crippling cuts and class sizes are soaring\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6 While the Labour Party has promised to protect low and middle earners from any tax rises, all Theresa May has promised is a cut to Corporation Tax for their\u00c2\u00a0big business\u00c2\u00a0friends.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

As well as hinting at attacks on employment rights with a \u00e2\u20ac\u015bred tape challenge\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 and \u00e2\u20ac\u015bone-in-two-out\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 rule, the manifesto also re-stated May\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s \u00e2\u20ac\u015bno deal is better than a bad deal\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 Brexit<\/a> mantra and pledged to leave the EU\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s single market and customs union.<\/p>\n

In a further sign of May\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s determination for an economically unsound \u00e2\u20ac\u015bhard\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 Brexit, she reaffirmed a pledge to reduce migration to the tens of thousands \u00e2\u20ac\u201c even though the Tories have for years failed to achieve it and industry has warned<\/a> such low levels of migration will hurt business.<\/p>\n

Unite community regional coordinator, John Coan, was one of a group of Unite community members who travelled to Halifax to attend a counter protest against May\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s damaging policies (pictured main and above). He said the Tories\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 emphasis on migration was an attempt to disguise their own failings as a government.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Blaming migrants <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Coan said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bIt\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s not migrants that are closing down Huddersfield Royal Infirmary\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s A&E just a few miles away from Halifax \u00e2\u20ac\u201c that\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s the Tories. Nor was it the migrants who cut public services to the bone in Halifax and countless other communities across the country. The Tories are using migration to hide the real issue.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bIt\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s insulting that Theresa May would come here to sell her leadership when the town\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s had years and years of public services being run on a shoe string. It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s also insulting that the Tories are now trying to turn their destruction of the social care system, which has hurt so many people in this area, into advantageous policies.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Unite general secretary Len McCluskey warned that Theresa May and the Tory party could not be trusted to do right by working people and their families.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

He said,\u00c2\u00a0\u00e2\u20ac\u015bTheresa May and her Tories should be apologising for the crisis in our public services and the income misery they caused for millions, not threatening the country with more of the same \u00e2\u20ac\u201c more cuts, more people struggling, our public services crumbling further into ruin.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe truth is that life for working people is always tougher under the Tories \u00e2\u20ac\u201c and will get worse.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bTheresa May and her Tory party cannot be trusted to do right by working people and their families. For a better, fairer Britain there really is only one option \u00e2\u20ac\u201c vote Labour\u00c2\u00a0on Thursday 8 June<\/a>.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n
