{"id":12424,"date":"2017-05-19T16:30:25","date_gmt":"2017-05-19T15:30:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=12424"},"modified":"2017-05-22T15:20:06","modified_gmt":"2017-05-22T14:20:06","slug":"catastrophic-consequences","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=12424","title":{"rendered":"\u00e2\u20ac\u0098Catastrophic consequences\u00e2\u20ac\u2122"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>The Conservative\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s plan to reduce immigration to the tens of thousands would cause \u00e2\u20ac\u015bcatastrophic economic consequences\u00e2\u20ac\u0165, a study by an employer-backed think tank shows.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/ourglobalfuture.com\/2017\/05\/the-case-for-immigration\/\">Global Future analysis<\/a> \u00e2\u20ac\u201c which found that Britain will need net migration of 200,000 annually following Brexit \u00e2\u20ac\u201c came after the Tories caused dismay with an election manifesto that reaffirmed a hard-line approach to leaving the EU.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The report highlights low productivity, an ageing population and labour shortages in areas such as health, engineering, construction, agriculture and hospitality as key factors in the need for migration levels of 200,000 people a year.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Describing the Tories migration policy as \u00e2\u20ac\u015boutdated and backwards looking\u00e2\u20ac\u0165, the report warns of \u00e2\u20ac\u015bcatastrophic consequences for the economy.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Collapse of whole sectors <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bA migration figure in excess of 200,000 will be needed to avoid collapse of whole sectors, as well as to prevent the crisis in public services such as Social Care and the NHS getting worse,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 the report states.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The findings were echoed by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbi.org.uk\/news\/our-full-response-to-the-conservative-party-manifesto\/\">Confederation of British Industry<\/a> (CBI) who said the Tories migration target would risk globally competing UK firms \u00e2\u20ac\u015bbeing left in the starting blocks because of a blunt approach to immigration.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Global Future chief executive, Gurnek Bains, warned that politicians who appear tough on immigration \u00e2\u20ac\u201c which currently stands at 273,000 people annually \u00e2\u20ac\u201c simply to win votes were doing the country a disservice.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>He said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bIt might help particular politicians win elections but voters and our national interests will be the losers\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6These politicians are not only selling voters short \u00e2\u20ac\u201c they are selling our country short too.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/no-mercy-may\/\">Tory manifesto<\/a>, launched yesterday, contains a host of other hard Brexit policy statements. These include Theresa May\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s \u00e2\u20ac\u015bno deal is better than a bad deal\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 mantra, a scenario the CBI have said would be like opening \u00e2\u20ac\u015bPandora\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Box\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 upon the economy.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>As well as repeating the Prime Minister\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s pledge to leave the single market, the manifesto made clear for the first time that the UK would also leave the customs union, something Chancellor Philip Hammond has argued against.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Border checks<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In March, MPs were <a href=\"https:\/\/unitebrexitcheck.org\/confidence-in-new-border-system-to-deal-with-fivefold-increase-in-custom-checks-after-brexit-has-collapsed\/\">warned<\/a> by HMRC that confidence in a new system to deal with an estimated fivefold increase in border checks \u00e2\u20ac\u201c from 60m to 300m \u00e2\u20ac\u201c after the UK\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s exit from the single market and customs union, had collapsed. The shipping industry said the implementation of such checks would a be a \u00e2\u20ac\u015b<a href=\"https:\/\/unitebrexitcheck.org\/physical-border-checks-at-ports-after-brexit-would-be-catastrophe-warns-shipping-industry\/\">catastrophe<\/a>\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 for British ports.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Tory manifesto also aggressively states that \u00e2\u20ac\u015bthe days of\u00c2\u00a0Britain\u00c2\u00a0making vast annual contributions to the European Union will end\u00e2\u20ac\u0165.
