{"id":12469,"date":"2017-05-26T15:39:20","date_gmt":"2017-05-26T14:39:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=12469"},"modified":"2017-05-26T15:51:25","modified_gmt":"2017-05-26T14:51:25","slug":"tax-justice","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=12469","title":{"rendered":"Tax justice"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>During spring 2016 the country was rocked by a leak from the Mossack Fonseca legal firm in Panama that exposed the shadowy and complicated network used by the global super rich to avoid paying tax.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Along with numerous other world leaders, Britain\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s then Prime Minister, David Cameron, was caught up in the \u00e2\u20ac\u015b<a href=\"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/nothing-to-hide\/\">Panama Papers<\/a>\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 scandal after they revealed he benefited from a tax-free offshore trust his father set up.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The revelation came after it emerged that Cameron lobbied against EU legislation to reign in off-shore tax avoidance in 2013, despite repeated public vows to do the opposite.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>While the Conservatives continue to ignore the glaring injustice exposed by the Panama leak, with Theresa May even threatening to emulate the Central American nation by turning the UK into a deregulated tax-haven after Brexit, Labour has promised to tackle the issue head-on.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A Labour government would carry out \u00e2\u20ac\u015bthe biggest crackdown in this country&#8217;s history&#8221; on tax avoidance, the party\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.labour.org.uk\/page\/-\/Images\/manifesto-2017\/Labour%20Manifesto%202017.pdf\">manifesto<\/a> states. Labour would close tax loopholes and go after the network of shell companies and offshore tax havens that hide the taxable incomes of the UK\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s super rich.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>\u00c2\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>\u00e2\u20ac\u0098Robin Hood\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 tax <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A \u00e2\u20ac\u015bRobin Hood\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 tax would also be introduced that would raise up to \u00c2\u014126bn for public services over the course of the next parliament, as well as curtailing the most destabilising forms of financial market speculation.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The tax, which would revise stamp duty for banks and hedge funds on share trading, financial derivatives and other assets, is currently being prepared for use in ten other European countries.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Shadow chancellor John McDonnell said the changes would bring \u00e2\u20ac\u015bfairness\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 to the financial system after the bail outs following the 2008 crash.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe next Labour government will introduce a &#8216;Robin Hood Tax&#8217; to make the financial sector pay its fair share after it received huge public bailouts in the crash,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 he said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Ordinary people are still being made to pay by the Tories for a crisis they didn&#8217;t cause through the worst spending cuts for generations.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;All we&#8217;re asking for is fairness in our tax system. By making those who trade in financial derivatives pay a small fraction of their profits, we can help properly fund our public services.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Rebalance the system<\/strong> <\/em><\/p>\n<p>An essential part of Labour\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s plan to rebalance the tax system is to restore HMRC staffing levels with an additional \u00c2\u0141200m of funding. Since 2004 HRMC staffing has fallen from more than 100,000 people to less than 60,000 today, leaving the organisation unable to investigate many tax avoiders. Labour estimates the move will bring in an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.labour.org.uk\/page\/-\/Images\/manifesto-2017\/9668_17%20TAX%20AVOIDANCE%20PDF%20%28MANI%20LAUNCH%29_v3.pdf\">extra \u00c2\u01416.5bn to \u00c2\u01418.5bn<\/a> a year in extra tax revenue.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unite assistant general secretary Steve Turner said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bFor years the double whammy of tax loopholes and cuts to HMRC have given tax avoiders free reign.
