Unite members working for British Airways\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 mixed fleet announced a two week strike today (Friday June 16), after the airline refused to accept the union\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s final compromise position on the outstanding issue of the sanctioning of striking cabin crew.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

In addition to the strike from 00:01 Saturday July 1 to 23:59 Sunday July 16, Unite said it would \u00e2\u20ac\u0098vigorously\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 pursue legal action against British Airways to the \u00e2\u20ac\u0098highest court in the land\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 on behalf of 1,400 cabin crew, who were sanctioned for taking strike action in a long running pay dispute.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Central to the claims will be the accusation that British Airways has formed a blacklist to impose sanctions on striking cabin crew. Sanctions have included cabin crew seeing bonus payments worth hundreds of pounds taken away and the removal of staff travel concessions.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Last week Unite suspended a planned four-day strike by British Airways\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 mixed fleet cabin crew, which was due to start today, in a bid to resolve the dispute through fresh talks.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Talks at the conciliation service Acas earlier this week saw Unite expressing \u00e2\u20ac\u0098deep frustration\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 over British Airways\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 failure to send its key decision makers to the talks. The airline\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s failure led to Unite writing to British Airways bosses with a final compromise positon for acceptance by noon today.<\/p>\n

Commenting Unite assistant general secretary Howard Beckett said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe refusal by British Airways bosses to meaningfully consider our compromise offer is deeply disappointing.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bA resolution to this long running dispute was within the grasp of British Airways, but instead of grabbing that opportunity, bosses rebuffed it. It now means British Airways faces an entirely avoidable two week strike and prolonged legal action on behalf of over 1,400 mixed cabin crew.<\/p>\n

Justice<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bUnite believes the divisive way British Airways has targeted striking members of cabin crew is unlawful and amounts to blacklisting. The airline should be under no illusion of Unite\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s intent to pursue justice on behalf of its members all the way to the highest court in the land.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe would urge British Airways\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 bosses to come to their senses and think again.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n

To date, there has been a total of 26 days of strike action since the beginning of January which has led to the cancellation of flights and the airline chartering, or \u00e2\u20ac\u0098wet leasing\u00e2\u20ac\u2122, aircraft from other airlines such as Titan Airways, Vueling and Thomson Airways to cover striking cabin crew.<\/p>\n

Since 2010 all British Airways new cabin crew employees join what is called \u00e2\u20ac\u0098mixed fleet\u00e2\u20ac\u2122, where despite promises that pay would be 10 per cent above the market rate, basic pay starts at just \u00c2\u014112,192 with \u00c2\u01413 an hour flying pay. Unite estimates that on average \u00e2\u20ac\u0098mixed fleet\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 cabin crew earn \u00c2\u014116,000, including allowances, a year.<\/p>\n
