{"id":12664,"date":"2017-06-22T13:58:33","date_gmt":"2017-06-22T12:58:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=12664"},"modified":"2017-06-23T14:19:24","modified_gmt":"2017-06-23T13:19:24","slug":"bin-strike-jobs-slash","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=12664","title":{"rendered":"Bin strike over jobs slash"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>Refuse workers at Birmingham city council are set to strike as the council swings the axe on 122 waste collection jobs amid claims of \u00e2\u20ac\u0098a bullying culture\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 and financial incompetence.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The refuse workers, members of Unite, will strike at 10.45 ending at 15.37 on Friday June 30. There will also be a series of two hour stoppages commencing at 06.00 on July 3, 11, 19 and 27 and August 4.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>There will also be an overtime ban with workers adhering to their contracted hours (06.00 to 15.37), plus returning to depots for all lunch and tea breaks, also starting on June 30.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unite said that the overspend for the 2016\/17 financial year, previously thought to be \u00c2\u01419.7m, had been confirmed by a top council boss as rising to \u00c2\u014111.9m \u00e2\u20ac\u201c contradicting\u00c2\u00a0the authority\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s previous press statements\u00c2\u00a0that these cuts were due to budget cuts and austerity measures.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unite regional officer Lynne Shakespeare has written to the city council\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s chief executive Stella Manzie calling for talks under the auspices of the conciliation service, Acas, as since the council was informed about the industrial action, management\u00c2\u00a0has refused to talk to Unite to resolve the issues.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In her letter to Ms Manzie, Lynne Shakespeare said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bThis situation cannot go on any longer hence our action ballot.\u00c2\u00a0I would invite you to join with us in non-binding conciliation with Acas as otherwise we shall have no alternative but to increase our action and\u00c2\u00a0fight this campaign on\u00c2\u00a0the\u00c2\u00a0streets, in the media and in the courts, if we need to.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>&#8216;Bullying&#8217;<\/strong> <\/em><\/p>\n<p>Shakespeare told UNITElive, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe council\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s actions have managed to combine financial incompetence in the waste management team and now they have\u00c2\u00a0started bullying our members\u00c2\u00a0as the bosses attempt to cut full-time jobs.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe council wants to axe 122 waste collection jobs after a woefully inadequate consultation with the unions.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe process was a sham, bordering on a farce,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 continued Shakespeare, \u00e2\u20ac\u015band that\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s why Unite members will be taking strike action to protect services to the public in the UK\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s biggest local authority.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bUnite also wants to preserve their jobs from an unnecessary cuts programme which has also seen a sharp increase of agency staff replacing permanent workers which is of no benefit to\u00c2\u00a0anyone.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unite members voted by 90 per cent for strike action over proposed job cuts to the city\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s waste and refuse service and attempts by council bosses to tear up long standing agreements with the union covering staffing levels and working patterns.
