{"id":12714,"date":"2017-06-29T16:30:55","date_gmt":"2017-06-29T15:30:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=12714"},"modified":"2017-06-29T16:33:38","modified_gmt":"2017-06-29T15:33:38","slug":"housing-emergency","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=12714","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Housing emergency&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>Council houses are being sold off nearly three times as quickly as news ones are built, new figures reveal.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Under the Tories\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 right-to-buy scheme more than 12,000 <a href=\"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/tag\/housing\/\">council houses<\/a> \u00e2\u20ac\u201c worth more than \u00c2\u0141930m \u00e2\u20ac\u201c have been sold by 72 local authorities since 2014, but only 4,309 were built over the same period.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The figures, released after Freedom of Information requests from the Liberal Democrats, appear to contradict promises Tory ministers made for \u00e2\u20ac\u015bone for one replacement\u00e2\u20ac\u0165.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>When right-to-buy was expanded in 2011, the Department for Communities and Local Government promised to ensure that \u00e2\u20ac\u015bevery home sold is replaced\u00e2\u20ac\u0165.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>&#8216;Desperate need&#8217;<\/strong> <\/em><\/p>\n<p>Unite assistant general secretary Steve Turner said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe whole premise of selling off hundreds of thousands of homes when there is a desperate need for more council and truly affordable housing is clearly ridiculous.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bIn reality the only ones to benefit from right-to-buy are the already <a href=\"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/at-the-mercy-of-landlords\/\">rich landlords<\/a> building housing empires as investments, as more and more people are forced into paying higher and higher private rents.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>He added, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe fact that the Tory\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s promise of building one house for every one sold is falling flat, is just another reminder of how ill thought out and reckless the right-to-buy scheme is.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThey must recognise that the way to resolve the crisis is by putting people to work in decent jobs building council homes.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>While local authorities in the capital have sold the most homes because of <a href=\"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/lives-uprooted\/\">London\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s housing bubble<\/a>, social housing stock across the UK has also been severely depleted.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In Kensington and Chelsea, where the council has been heavily criticised for the <a href=\"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/12586-2\/\">Grenfell Tower<\/a> fire, 46 houses have been sold since 2014 but no new council houses have been built. Waltham Forest sold 345 council homes, but no new homes have been built since 2014.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In South Tyneside, which has seen deprivation levels rocket, the council has not replaced any of the 417 houses it has sold. Aberdeen City Council has built 24 homes since 2014, yet has sold more than 20 times that amount.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>&#8216;Emergency&#8217;<\/strong> <\/em><\/p>\n<p>Paul Kershaw, who represents housing workers in Unite, described the depletion of affordable housing in the UK as an \u00e2\u20ac\u015bemergency\u00e2\u20ac\u0165.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>He said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe housing crisis is an emergency.
