{"id":12728,"date":"2017-06-30T16:59:03","date_gmt":"2017-06-30T15:59:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=12728"},"modified":"2017-06-30T16:59:03","modified_gmt":"2017-06-30T15:59:03","slug":"refuse-workers-jobs-slash-strike","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=12728","title":{"rendered":"Refuse workers in jobs slash strike"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>Refuse workers at Birmingham city council were on strike today (Friday June 30), as the council swings the axe on 121 waste collection jobs amid claims of \u00e2\u20ac\u0098a bullying culture\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 and financial incompetence.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unite has accused the council of \u00e2\u20ac\u0098playing fast-and-loose\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 over the union\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s genuine offer to engage in talks with the conciliation service, Acas.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The refuse workers, members of Unite, began their strike today at 10:45. This stoppage will be followed by a series of two hour stoppages commencing at 06:00 on: 3, 11, 19 and 27 July and 4 August.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>There was also an overtime ban with workers adhering to their contracted hours (06.00 to 15.37), plus returning to depots for all lunch and tea breaks.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unite regional officer Lynne Shakespeare said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bI have been offering talks under the auspices of Acas since 16 June. Yet, it was only yesterday that the council offered informal talks, having waited 13 days to respond to Unite\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s genuine offer of substantive talks at Acas.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bIt is for the Birmingham public to judge who is dragging their feet over seeking a solution to this dispute.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>&#8216;Fast and loose with members&#8217; jobs&#8217;<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bOur action starts as the council has played fast-and-loose with our members\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 jobs. The blame for any missed\u00c2\u00a0collections rests squarely on the council\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s weak shoulders.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0It has shown itself incapable of running the service, let alone capable of making any meaningful or positive changes to it.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe 121 jobs the authority wishes to axe are safety critical for operation of the waste refuse service.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe call on the council, once again, to enter into talks with Acas, otherwise this dispute is set to escalate in the weeks ahead.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unite has said that the overspend for the 2016\/17 financial year, previously thought to be \u00c2\u01419.7m, had been confirmed by a top council boss as rising to \u00c2\u014111.9m contradicting\u00c2\u00a0the authority\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s previous press statements\u00c2\u00a0that these cuts were due to budget cuts and austerity measures.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unite members voted by 90 per cent for strike action over proposed job cuts to the city\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s waste and refuse service and attempts by council bosses to tear up long standing agreements with the union covering staffing levels and working patterns.
