{"id":12746,"date":"2017-07-04T17:09:41","date_gmt":"2017-07-04T16:09:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=12746"},"modified":"2017-07-04T17:09:41","modified_gmt":"2017-07-04T16:09:41","slug":"tribute-worker-solidarity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=12746","title":{"rendered":"A \u00e2\u20ac\u0098tribute to worker solidarity\u00e2\u20ac\u2122"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>The long-running Woolwich Ferry \u00e2\u20ac\u0098bullying culture\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 dispute has been settled, following \u00e2\u20ac\u0098a remarkable display of worker solidarity\u00e2\u20ac\u2122, Unite announced today (Tuesday July 4).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The deal hammered out between Unite and Briggs Marine Contractors Ltd has seen one manager being dismissed following a disciplinary hearing; a senior manager leaving the site; and a \u00e2\u20ac\u0098fair\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 settlement for the female employee who suffered sexual harassment.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The company, which runs the service on behalf of Transport for London (TfL), has also agreed to a new improved health and safety regime, putting safety first, as well as settling outstanding issues relating to pay and allowances.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unite regional officer Onay Kasab said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe are pleased to announce today (Tuesday 4 July) a comprehensive agreement to settle the dispute at the ferry which is a tribute to a remarkable display of worker solidarity.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>\u00e2\u20ac\u0098Collective action\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bBy taking collective action and standing firm since this dispute started last winter, Unite has demonstrated that unions can achieve great victories in the workplace on behalf of their members and that bosses don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t have carte blanche to engage in unacceptable behaviour.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe union was able to resolve the sexual harassment complaint to the member&#8217;s satisfaction which sends out a strong message about the abhorrent nature of this offence.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unite regional legal and disputes officer Nicky Marcus said: \u00e2\u20ac\u015bThis dispute is testament to the fact that where the legal system fails to protect our members, exercising the right to take lawful industrial action can prove to be a powerful and highly effective means of seeking redress for all sorts of injustice.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Workers, belonging to Unite and the GMB, took two days of strike action \u00e2\u20ac\u201c 27 January and 3 February \u00e2\u20ac\u201c before suspending industrial action so that talks could take place.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>About 3,500 vehicles a day use the free service across the Thames which opened in 1889, following the abolition of tolls across bridges to the west of London.
