{"id":12895,"date":"2017-07-28T16:49:46","date_gmt":"2017-07-28T15:49:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=12895"},"modified":"2017-07-28T16:49:46","modified_gmt":"2017-07-28T15:49:46","slug":"grenfell-fire-police-probe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=12895","title":{"rendered":"Grenfell fire police probe"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>The police\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s investigation into possible corporate manslaughter charges relating to the Grenfell Tower tragedy, when an estimated 80 people died in the fire, was welcomed by Unite today (Friday July 28).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unite, which is representing about 30 families affected by the tragedy, said that \u00e2\u20ac\u0098people have to be accountable for their decisions\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 in the run-up and aftermath of June\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s fire.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The police probe relating to corporate manslaughter centres on the actions of the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea and the Chelsea Tenant Management Organisation (TMO).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bClearly people have to be held accountable if their decisions have caused deaths and, more so, if those decisions were made with the knowledge of the very real risks to lives,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 said Unite assistant general secretary for legal services Howard Beckett.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe are representing close to 30 families now and we will represent our members in all legal forums, including an inquiry, inquest or to advise them in regard to whether anyone has criminal responsibility for this.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe welcome the continued police investigation that they have \u00e2\u20ac\u0098reasonable grounds\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 to suspect that both organisations may have committed an offence under the Corporate Manslaughter and Corporate Homicide Act 2007,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 he added.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month, Unite announced that it was providing legal representation for a number of the families involved in the Grenfell Tower tragedy and would be applying for core participant status in the public inquiry into the fire.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The union, which has dozens of members who lived in the tower, some of whom lost their lives, is making the application to ensure that victims\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 families and survivors have the expertise and resources to get answers and have their voices heard.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The union has also donated \u00c2\u0141100,000 to the Red Cross London Fire Relief appeal set up to assist the people affected by the tragedy.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u00c2\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>Photo by Mark Thomas <\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The police\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s investigation into possible corporate manslaughter charges relating to the Grenfell Tower tragedy, when an estimated 80 people died in the fire, was welcomed by Unite today (Friday July 28). &nbsp;
