{"id":13122,"date":"2017-08-29T15:47:26","date_gmt":"2017-08-29T14:47:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=13122"},"modified":"2017-08-29T15:47:26","modified_gmt":"2017-08-29T14:47:26","slug":"workers-first","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=13122","title":{"rendered":"Workers first"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p style=\"line-height: 22.5pt; margin: 12.0pt 0cm 16.5pt 0cm;\">Unite has welcomed Labour\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s announcement that it supports staying in the EU single market after the Brexit negotiations have finished.<\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 22.5pt; margin: 12.0pt 0cm 16.5pt 0cm;\">\n<p style=\"line-height: 22.5pt; box-sizing: border-box; margin: 12.0pt 0cm 16.5pt 0cm;\"><span style=\"background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);\">The policy would avoid a damaging economic cliff edge once Britain has left the EU in March 2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 22.5pt; box-sizing: border-box; margin: 12.0pt 0cm 16.5pt 0cm;\">\n<p style=\"line-height: 22.5pt; box-sizing: border-box; margin: 12.0pt 0cm 16.5pt 0cm;\"><span style=\"background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);\">It sets out a clear delineation between Labour\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s and the Tories\u00e2\u20ac\u2122\u00c2\u00a0<a style=\"box-sizing: border-box;\" href=\"http:\/\/unitebrexitcheck.org\/\">Brexit<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0positions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 22.5pt; box-sizing: border-box; margin: 12.0pt 0cm 16.5pt 0cm;\">\n<p style=\"line-height: 22.5pt; box-sizing: border-box; margin: 12.0pt 0cm 16.5pt 0cm;\"><span style=\"background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);\">Shadow Brexit secretary Keir Starmer said the UK must remain within the single market and customs union during a transitional period, estimated by Labour to last between two and four years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 22.5pt; box-sizing: border-box; margin: 12.0pt 0cm 16.5pt 0cm;\">\n<p style=\"line-height: 22.5pt; box-sizing: border-box; margin: 12.0pt 0cm 16.5pt 0cm;\"><span style=\"background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);\">Starmer also left open the option of staying within the single market and \u00e2\u20ac\u015ba form of \u00c2\u00a0customs union\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 after transition, so long as a new deal on free movement can be agreed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 22.5pt; box-sizing: border-box; margin: 12.0pt 0cm 16.5pt 0cm;\">\n<p style=\"line-height: 22.5pt; box-sizing: border-box; margin: 12.0pt 0cm 16.5pt 0cm;\"><span style=\"background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);\">In an\u00c2\u00a0<a style=\"box-sizing: border-box;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/2017\/aug\/27\/labour-jeremy-corbyn-brexit-policy-change\">article<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0in Sunday\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s\u00c2\u00a0<i style=\"box-sizing: border-box;\">Observer<\/i>, Starmer wrote, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe need a transitional Brexit deal that provides maximum certainty and stability. Labour will deliver it.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 22.5pt; box-sizing: border-box; margin: 12.0pt 0cm 16.5pt 0cm;\">\n<p style=\"line-height: 22.5pt; box-sizing: border-box; margin: 12.0pt 0cm 16.5pt 0cm;\"><span style=\"background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);\">He criticised the \u00e2\u20ac\u015bglacial progress\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 of the Tory-led negotiations and Theresa May\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s dangerous \u00e2\u20ac\u015bideological obsession\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 with leaving the single market and customs union as part of a transitional arrangement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 22.5pt; box-sizing: border-box; margin: 12.0pt 0cm 16.5pt 0cm;\">\n<p style=\"line-height: 22.5pt; box-sizing: border-box; margin: 12.0pt 0cm 16.5pt 0cm;\"><span style=\"background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);\">He wrote, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe fanciful and unachievable proposals put forward in the\u00c2\u00a0<a style=\"box-sizing: border-box;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/new-customs-proposals-laid-out-by-government-in-new-paper-on-future-relationship-with-the-eu\">government\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s recent customs paper<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0show the colossal risks it is willing to take with British jobs and the economy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 22.5pt; box-sizing: border-box; margin: 12.0pt 0cm 16.5pt 0cm;\">\n<p style=\"line-height: 22.5pt; box-sizing: border-box; margin: 12.0pt 0cm 16.5pt 0cm;\"><span style=\"background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);\">\u00e2\u20ac\u015bLabour will not take those risks. We will always put jobs and the economy first. That means remaining in a form of customs union with the EU is a possible end destination for Labour, but that must be subject to negotiations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 22.5pt; box-sizing: border-box; margin: 12.0pt 0cm 16.5pt 0cm;\">\n<p style=\"line-height: 22.5pt; box-sizing: border-box; margin: 12.0pt 0cm 16.5pt 0cm;\"><span style=\"background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);\">\u00e2\u20ac\u015bIt also means that Labour is flexible as to whether the benefits of the single market are best retained by negotiating a new single market relationship or by working up from a bespoke trade deal.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 22.5pt; box-sizing: border-box; margin: 12.0pt 0cm 16.5pt 0cm;\">\n<p style=\"line-height: 22.5pt; box-sizing: border-box; margin: 12.0pt 0cm 16.5pt 0cm;\"><span style=\"background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);\">Starmer was clear any final deal struck during the transition period must include \u00e2\u20ac\u015bthe need for more effective management of migration\u00e2\u20ac\u0165.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 22.5pt; box-sizing: border-box; margin: 12.0pt 0cm 16.5pt 0cm;\">\n<p style=\"line-height: 22.5pt; box-sizing: border-box; margin: 12.0pt 0cm 16.5pt 0cm;\"><span style=\"background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);\">Labour\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s position echoes that of Unite, which is calling for\u00c2\u00a0<a style=\"box-sizing: border-box;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.unitebrexitcheck.org\/industry\/\">free movement safeguards<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0that defend all workers against wage cutting \u00e2\u20ac\u201c including ending the exploitation of migrant workers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 22.5pt; box-sizing: border-box; margin: 12.0pt 0cm 16.5pt 0cm;\">\n<p style=\"line-height: 22.5pt; box-sizing: border-box; margin: 12.0pt 0cm 16.5pt 0cm;\"><span style=\"background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);\">The safeguards include stronger collective bargaining rights, so any employer wishing to recruit labour abroad should only be able to do so if they are either covered by a proper trade union agreement or by sectoral collective bargaining.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 22.5pt; box-sizing: border-box; margin: 12.0pt 0cm 16.5pt 0cm;\">\n<p style=\"line-height: 22.5pt; box-sizing: border-box; margin: 12.0pt 0cm 16.5pt 0cm;\"><span style=\"background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);\">This would end the race-to-the bottom attacks on wages, terms and conditions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 22.5pt; box-sizing: border-box; margin: 12.0pt 0cm 16.5pt 0cm;\">\n<p style=\"line-height: 22.5pt; box-sizing: border-box; margin: 12.0pt 0cm 16.5pt 0cm;\"><span style=\"background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);\">Responding to Labour\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s new plans, Unite general secretary Len McCluskey said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bWorkers will be relieved that one party at least has got their backs, the Labour party.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 22.5pt; box-sizing: border-box; margin: 12.0pt 0cm 16.5pt 0cm;\">\n<p style=\"line-height: 22.5pt; box-sizing: border-box; margin: 12.0pt 0cm 16.5pt 0cm;\"><span style=\"background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);\">\u00e2\u20ac\u015bAccess to the single market and the customs union is vital to secure tens of thousands of jobs across the country, particularly in our manufacturing heartlands where the Tories\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 hard Brexit could have catastrophic consequences.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 22.5pt; box-sizing: border-box; margin: 12.0pt 0cm 16.5pt 0cm;\">\n<p style=\"line-height: 22.5pt; box-sizing: border-box; margin: 12.0pt 0cm 16.5pt 0cm;\"><span style=\"background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);\">\u00e2\u20ac\u015bJobs and living standards are on the line here, something that seems to have escaped the hard Brexit bunch.
