{"id":13132,"date":"2017-08-30T17:47:52","date_gmt":"2017-08-30T16:47:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=13132"},"modified":"2017-08-31T14:28:12","modified_gmt":"2017-08-31T13:28:12","slug":"pushed-into-debt","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=13132","title":{"rendered":"\u00e2\u20ac\u0098Pushed into debt\u00e2\u20ac\u2122"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>Nearly a fifth people struggling with debts have had their credit card limit automatically increased, a figure higher than for regular cardholders, new research shows.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.citizensadvice.org.uk\/about-us\/how-citizens-advice-works\/media\/press-releases\/credit-card-firms-pushing-people-into-long-term-debt-warns-citizens-advice\/\">Citizens Advice<\/a> found 18 per cent of people struggling financially had their credit card limit increased automatically, compared to 12 per cent overall.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The research comes after the Bank of England issued a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2017\/jul\/24\/bank-of-england-household-debt-bank-credit-card-car-loans\">warning<\/a> to banks about how they are granting credit to consumers, amid worries that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/business\/2017\/06\/27\/bank-england-orders-banks-hold-extra-114bn-emergencies\/\">irresponsible lending<\/a> could lead to another financial crash.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Consumer borrowing has risen to more than \u00c2\u0141200bn for the first time since the 2008 financial crisis, with a third of the debt on credit cards.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Financial Conduct Regulator estimates that around 3.3m people are in persistent debt.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Citizens Advice Chief Executive Gillian Guy, said automatically increasing credit card limits for those struggling with debt was making their situations worse.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>\u00e2\u20ac\u0098Irresponsible\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Guy said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bIrresponsible offers of further credit are pushing people into long term debt cycles.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe regulator must ensure that lenders are taking into account people\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s whole financial and personal situation before agreeing further credit.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bBanning firms from raising existing customers\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 credit limits without seeking their express permission first would also help people take more control over their finances.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Recent bank <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2017\/jul\/31\/fca-unauthorised-overdrafts-car-loan-market\">figures<\/a> show an increase in unsecured spending, which includes credit cards, with the number of transactions growing by 10 per cent in the year to June.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Cost of living crisis <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Unite assistant general secretary Steve Turner pointed to stagnating wages and a cost of living crisis exacerbated by rising inflation as reasons for the increased reliance on credit.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bMany people have no other option but to add still more to a growing burden of personal debt by borrowing ever increasing amounts of money. But it doesn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t have to be this way,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 Turner said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bAlongside a commitment to major public investment, state support for full employment in decent, secure and rewarding work and an industrial strategy which rebuilds our manufacturing base and reboots an economy that\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s stagnating, the government can attack the central cause of the problem that\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s causing household debts to spiral out of control \u00e2\u20ac\u201d the cost of housing.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThis entails bringing down housing costs by embarking on a mass council housebuilding programme and introducing rent controls alongside measures to ensure the regulation of private landlords, the provision of safe housing stock and long term tenant security.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Turner added, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bIt also means introducing a true \u00c2\u014110 an hour Living Wage across that board \u00e2\u20ac\u201d a wage that doesn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t discriminate on the basis of your age \u00e2\u20ac\u201d the provision of free university education and the creation of decent, secure, sustainable jobs in a diverse and growing economy.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe must acknowledge that out-of-control debt is only a symptom of a much more profound illness.
