The treatment of disabled people under the Tories is a \u00e2\u20ac\u015bhuman catastrophe\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 the United Nations has said.<\/p>\n

In a damning indictment, the UN Committee on the rights of disabled people said that during the 10 years it had been operating Britain had caused more concerns than any other country.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

A report by the committee stated that the Tory\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s austerity<\/a> campaign had resulted in disabled people\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s finances falling, forcing them into unsuitable accommodation and leaving many impoverished.<\/p>\n

Committee chairwoman Theresia Degener branded the Conservatives\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 treatment of disabled people<\/a> a \u00e2\u20ac\u015bhuman catastrophe\u00e2\u20ac\u0165.<\/p>\n

Overwhelming evidence <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

She said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe austerity measures that they have taken – they are affecting half a million people, each disabled person is losing between \u00c2\u01412,000 and \u00c2\u01413,000 pounds per year, people are pushed into work situations without being recognised as vulnerable, and the evidence that we had in front of us was just overwhelming.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n

Committee member Stig Langvad said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe UK is at the moment going backwards in accordance to the information that we have received.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The committee highlighted failures to fulfil commitments to provide inclusive education, high rates of school bullying and increasing numbers of disabled people living in poverty<\/a>.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Langvad said disabled people should be included in the Brexit<\/a> preparations to prevent them from losing protections secured under EU law.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u0098Afraid of the future\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

He said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bPersons with disabilities are afraid of the future since they do not know what is happening and since they do not feel that they are involved in the discussions on how to secure the rights of people with disabilities afterwards.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n

A government spokeswoman said the UN\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s report \u00e2\u20ac\u015bdoes not accurately reflect the evidence we gave to the UN and fails to recognise all the progress we\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve made to empower disabled people in all aspects of their lives.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n

Head of Unite Community<\/a> Liane Groves rubbished the government\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s claim.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThat the government of the fifth largest economy on earth has presided over a \u00e2\u20ac\u015bhuman catastrophe\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 for disabled people is beyond disgraceful,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 Groves said.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bSadly the UN\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s report, while shocking, is not surprising. For seven years the Tories have systematically attacked disabled people\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s independence and living standards.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe Tories have decimated their care, denied them dignity and set them up as scapegoats through savage welfare and public service cuts and the encouragement of a culture that seeks to harden people\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s hearts towards the most vulnerable.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n

She added, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bUnbelievably, and despite all evidence to the contrary, the government claims it is actually helping disabled people. If they believe the current state of affairs is success, I dread to think what the Tories would count as failure.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n
