{"id":13203,"date":"2017-09-06T15:51:42","date_gmt":"2017-09-06T14:51:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=13203"},"modified":"2017-09-06T15:53:50","modified_gmt":"2017-09-06T14:53:50","slug":"ashleys-year-broken-vows","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=13203","title":{"rendered":"Ashley\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s year of broken vows"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>Today (September 6) members of Unite Scotland\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Community Branch made their voices heard as part of Unite\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s national protest against Sports Direct and the broken promises of its controversial owner, Mike Ashley.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this week Unite\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s national campaign exposed Sports Direct\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s latest dirty trick. The company now has a sign-in policy using emojis. If you hit the unhappy face you are in trouble with the bosses \u00e2\u20ac\u201c they\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ll interrogate you about why you are not over the moon to work for Mr Ashley.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Today\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s protest was more about Mike Ashley\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s broken promises in the last year. Last September he gave clear pledges to the workers in his company that things would change. But instead it looks like one more broken promise on another.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Ashley has failed to give guaranteed hours for shop-workers or put any warehouse personnel on permanent contracts; and he has failed to meet a pledge to stop the use of zero hours contracts.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Likewise he has failed to make such contracts into guaranteed hours backed up with signed contracts. And most significantly Ashley promised an end to paying below the minimum wage \u00e2\u20ac\u201c but has also failed to do that.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>As the cries of \u00e2\u20ac\u015bZero Hours No Way Make Mike Ashley Pay\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 rang out outside Sports Direct in Glasgow\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Sauchiehall Street Unite Community Branch chairperson Keith Stoddart said, <strong><em>\u00c2\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bUnite gave Mike Ashley a year to put his house In order and he hasn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t done that. He ought to know that the best assets his company has are its workers. It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s time they were treated with dignity respect and decent wages. We say No to this modern slavery.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>\u00c2\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>One of the younger members of the Unite Community branch called on young people who are suffering exploitation at work to join Unite. Michael Quinn asked, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bHow can you fight for a better deal on your own?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bCompanies like Sports Direct are not in the habit of handing out decent wages and conditions.
