Attempts to force paramedics in Yorkshire to undergo random drug and alcohol tests are being questioned by Unite.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The Yorkshire Ambulance Service (YAS) is deliberating on whether to change it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s self-regulating stance on drugs and alcohol, in order to secure a patient transport contract for South Yorkshire.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

If the changes go ahead YAS will be the first ambulance<\/a> service in the country to carry out the tests.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Currently ambulance services rely on staff to report concerns or incidences of drugs and alcohol in the workplace, however the new contract YAS is bidding on stipulates testing must be enforced.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Unite regional officer for Yorkshire<\/a>, Terry Cunliffe, said the policy\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s current structure was \u00e2\u20ac\u015bnot fit for purpose\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 and needs to be rethought.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bParamedics are already under constant supervision from their colleagues, managers and the public. They work to the highest standards and adhere to a professional code of conduct,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 Cunliffe said.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bOur members don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t want to work alongside someone who is under the influence of drink or drugs when they are driving an ambulance. It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s in their interests to be vigilant against such behaviour.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThere are better ways of doing it than random drug testing. I have no examples in health where it works.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Cunliffe also voiced concerns over the singling out of specific health<\/a> professions for the tests.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

He said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bIt\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s not clear who it will apply to \u00e2\u20ac\u201c all staff or a particular group.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bI don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t want anything that compromises patient safety or care, but testing needs to be fair.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

A YAS spokesperson said the service \u00e2\u20ac\u015bis looking to introduce a Fitness for Work Policy\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 as part of its commitment to staff wellbeing.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The spokesperson said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bThis includes ensuring that any alcohol and drug-related issues are dealt with effectively and consistently and that managers have adequate training and support to deal with staff who are seeking help.<\/p>\n
