We must fight for a Brexit that puts jobs and workers first, argued Unite assistant general secretary Steve Turner on the first day of the TUC conference in Brighton yesterday (September 10).<\/p>\n

Moving General Council Statement 1 in his capacity as a TUC general council spokesperson, Turner said that as trade unionists, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bit is our job, our duty to ensure that on leaving the European Union, we do all we can to protect jobs, fair trade and workers\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 rights.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n

He highlighted the importance of decent, safe, well-paid unionised jobs, as well as a level playing field on workers\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 rights and ongoing access to our largest market, which would protect millions of jobs dependent on barrier-free, tariff-free trade.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Turner said we must also protect \u00e2\u20ac\u015blong-fought for consumer, citizen, environmental and human rights, alongside fair migration rights for UK and European citizens.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n

He reminded Congress that while trade unions alongside the Labour party campaigned on a platform of remain and reform, people voted for Brexit to \u00e2\u20ac\u015breject Tory austerity as much Brussels bureaucracy\u00e2\u20ac\u0165. This austerity continues to \u00e2\u20ac\u015battack wages, close local services, underfund our NHS, attack our welfare state and drain people of hope,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 Turner said.<\/p>\n

He added that the hard Brexit the Tory government is now pursuing \u00e2\u20ac\u015bwould lead to a growing economic and investment crisis, on-going attacks on our rights and undermining of good, secure jobs\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 which he said \u00e2\u20ac\u015bwill do nothing to address genuine fears and concerns.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n

As the Tory party is at war with itself and the cabinet is more interested in self-preservation and divided by leadership ambitions than securing a deal with Europe that protects the interests of ordinary people, Turner explained just how dangerous the government\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Brexit strategy is.<\/p>\n

He outlined how this strategy is \u00e2\u20ac\u015bputting at risk the good Friday agreement and peace in Ireland\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 and \u00e2\u20ac\u015bfueling the language of hatred and far right activity in our workplaces and communities.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n

Pointing out how trade unions had \u00e2\u20ac\u015bwon the narrative for a transition period,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 Turner said that trade unions now must continue in their demands as they fight for a \u00e2\u20ac\u015bnegotiated settlement that provides longer term tariff-free, barrier-free fair trade with our largest market\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 and \u00e2\u20ac\u015btrade that maintains millions of good jobs, in industries that allow us to fund the decent public services we rightly demand.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n

Turner praised the General Council Statement for \u00e2\u20ac\u015btackling the hard questions that government won\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 and for laying out trade unions\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 \u00e2\u20ac\u015bvision, aspiration and intent\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 on Brexit.<\/p>\n

As he concluded, Turner reminded Congress, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re natural-born negotiators \u00e2\u20ac\u201d we know that you keep all options on the table until the deal\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s done.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n
