{"id":13276,"date":"2017-09-11T13:42:51","date_gmt":"2017-09-11T12:42:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=13276"},"modified":"2017-09-11T16:10:58","modified_gmt":"2017-09-11T15:10:58","slug":"time-for-action-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=13276","title":{"rendered":"Time for action"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif';\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Tackling the housing crisis that continues to envelope our communities has become one of the most pressing issues of our time. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif';\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">For \u00e2\u20ac\u0098generation rent\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 who face living in insecure homes and working insecure jobs, families forced into B&amp;Bs, adults trapped living in their childhood bedrooms, young people being denied housing benefit, millions living in homes not fit for habitation and the growing numbers of homeless people on our streets.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif';\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe time for action on this issue is long past,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 said Jayne Taylor, Unite representative. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif';\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The Labour party\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s manifesto is committed to increasing council house building \u00e2\u20ac\u201c recognition that council housing has a crucial role to play in ensuring that everyone has a home that is affordable, warm, and secure and where you can build a life and a family but also that councils need to be able to suspend the right to buy. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif';\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00e2\u20ac\u015bDirectly investing in housing makes social policy sense and economic sense,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 said Taylor. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif';\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00e2\u20ac\u015bHousing is one of the clearest examples of the Tory\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s recklessness and narrow mindedness that prizes the commitment to the market above all else,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 she added. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif';\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Housing is a central driver of economic growth and through public investment we can ensure it is an investment that creates good jobs and apprenticeships as well as homes for all. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif';\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe new housing consensus that we want to forge must reverse the trend in privatisation, marketization and deregulation that has scarred the provision and quality of one of the most basic human needs,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 said Taylor. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif';\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The fragmentation and casualization of the construction industry denies workers their employment rights and has contributed to the massive decline in apprenticeship numbers. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif';\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00e2\u20ac\u015bConference, as a movement we have changed the terms of debate on housing.
