{"id":13353,"date":"2017-09-13T11:20:47","date_gmt":"2017-09-13T10:20:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=13353"},"modified":"2017-09-13T11:28:32","modified_gmt":"2017-09-13T10:28:32","slug":"for-all-our-futures","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=13353","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;For all our futures&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>Teachers and others working in education are among the most overworked in the labour market \u00e2\u20ac\u201c they regularly work more than 20 hours a week over and above what they are paid to do.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>But their job is among the most important \u00e2\u20ac\u201c educating our children and so determining the course of the nation\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s future.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unite delegate Phillipa Marsden argued that excessive workloads is a critical issue that must be tackled head on as she spoke in support of motion 52 yesterday\u00c2\u00a0(September 12).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bI don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t think I need to remind you that education is vital in our society and for all of our futures,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 she told Congress.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A high quality education can ensure that each child and learner has the opportunity to discover and achieve their potential.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bBut we cannot do this if our education staff \u00e2\u20ac\u201c our teachers and our support staff \u00e2\u20ac\u201c are battling through excessive workloads and are struggling with real pay cuts,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 Marsden noted.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>As an educator herself, Marsden said she despairs at how discussions have become \u00e2\u20ac\u015bwarped\u00e2\u20ac\u0165, referring only \u00e2\u20ac\u015bto outputs and league table statistics, but rarely the children whose futures are in our hands.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>She lambasted the marketisation of the education sector, which she said, has led to education staff being underpaid.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bAnd I see first-hand how those I know working in education are working up to 20 hours extra a week, their evenings and weekends eaten up by the bureaucracy that is needed to keep this market operating &#8211; despite it not providing the school places, the quality of education and the accountability that children, their families and our local communities deserve,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 she added.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Marsden emphasised the necessity for an education workforce that is \u00e2\u20ac\u015bhighly motivated, skilled and is able to impart their passion and knowledge, to support learners and enable them to develop.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bYet we have dedicated education workers who are exhausted, are unable to have breaks, are unable to spend time with their own families,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 she noted.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bAnd as the motion highlights, they are battling against the odds to deliver high quality learning.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>As Marsden called on Congress to support the motion to pressure the government to take action on excessive workloads in education, she explained why this is a vital issue for the trade union movement.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bAs trade unionists we should be concerned that not only is this hindering children from having the best education they can, but we are also sending a signal that this is what to expect from the world of work,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 she said. \u00c2\u00a0\u00e2\u20ac\u015bAnd they deserve better.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The motion was passed.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Teachers and others working in education are among the most overworked in the labour market \u00e2\u20ac\u201c they regularly work more than 20 hours a week over and above what they are paid to do. &nbsp;
