Unite savaged the Tories for bungling the Brexit negotiations yesterday (October 9), after the Prime Minister admitted the government is planning for a damaging \u00e2\u20ac\u015bno deal\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 exit.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn also blasted May for making no real progress despite eight months of talks, after she warned MPs the country must be prepared for crashing out of the EU.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Although insisting the deadlocked negotiations with the EU were making headway in her statement to House of Commons, for the first time May set out \u00e2\u20ac\u015bsteps to minimise disruption\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 when Britain exits the EU in 2019.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

These include plans for the UK to trade under WTO rules<\/a> and massive inland lorry parks to cope with a huge increase in customs checks<\/a> and the tailbacks they will cause.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

May\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s statement came as a report<\/a> from law firm Baker & McKenzie and consultancy Oxford Economics found that the UK\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s technology, automotive, health-care and consumer goods sectors could lose \u00c2\u014117bn a year in export revenues in the event of hard Brexit.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Together the four sectors make up 42 per cent of Britain\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s manufacturing GDP.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Responding to the Prime Minister\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s statement, Unite general secretary Len McCluskey said the government\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s priority must be to avoid a hard Brexit by securing continued membership of the single market and a customs union.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

In the event of the UK crashing out of the EU without a deal, McCluskey said the government needs to put in place plans to ensure ordinary people do not suffer for the government\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s mistakes.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

McCluskey said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bTheresa May said it was necessary to prepare for \u00e2\u20ac\u0098every eventuality\u00e2\u20ac\u2122. If that means that no deal is now a real possibility, we have to know what the cost of that will be.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u0098What assurances?\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bHow much is the Treasury stockpiling for the event that we do crash out and what assurances will it give that this won\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t be paid for by working people through endless more years of exhausting austerity?\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n

Despite the obvious risks, Brexiteer Tory MPs continued to extol the virtues of walking away from the negotiations, with John Redwood telling the BBC that \u00e2\u20ac\u015bno deal is fine<\/a>\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 during an interview following May\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s statement.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u0098Mendacity\u00e2\u20ac\u2122<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Redwood\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s comments were in stark opposition to those of Tory grandee Chris Pattern, who accused the Tory-led leave campaign of \u00e2\u20ac\u015bmendacity\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/a> while saying its vision of Brexit will leave the UK \u00e2\u20ac\u015bimpoverished\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 and \u00e2\u20ac\u015bless significant on the world stage\u00e2\u20ac\u0165.<\/p>\n

The differences highlight the Brexit fault lines running through the Conservative Party, which have prevented the government from setting out a clear position during the EU negotiations.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Jeremy Corbyn said the Tories squabbling risked the nation\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s future.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

He told MPs, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bJust at the moment when Britain needs a strong negotiating team we have a cabinet at each other\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s throats. Half of the Conservative Party want the foreign secretary sacked, the other half want the chancellor sacked.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bRather than fighting over their own jobs, the reality is that millions of people\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s jobs and living standards depend on the success of the negotiations. If the government can\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t negotiate a deal for Britain, they should make way for a team that can.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n
