{"id":13843,"date":"2017-11-02T13:21:20","date_gmt":"2017-11-02T13:21:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=13843"},"modified":"2017-11-02T15:19:02","modified_gmt":"2017-11-02T15:19:02","slug":"final-wake-call","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=13843","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Final wake-up call&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>As the NHS suffers a growing retention and recruitment crisis, new figures reveal that Brexit may be compounding the problem.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The number of EU nurses and midwives coming to the UK to work has plummeted by 89 per cent since the referendum vote, while the number leaving the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC)\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s register has shot up by 67 per cent.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nmc.org.uk\/globalassets\/sitedocuments\/other-publications\/the-nmc-register-30-september-2017.pdf\">latest figures published today<\/a> (November 11) from the NMC\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s register \u00e2\u20ac\u201c which comprise nurses and midwives who have met the organisation\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s standards and are qualified to practice in the UK \u00e2\u20ac\u201c show that the problem is getting worse with each successive year.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Between October 2015 and September 2016, a year after the EU referendum, 2,435 EU nurses and midwives left the NMC register, while in the last year, this number has skyrocketed to 4,067.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Nurses and midwives from the EU leaving in droves is happening against a backdrop of nurses from the UK leaving as well.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In fact, for the first time ever, more people are leaving the NMC register than are joining it, the Council highlighted.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>And it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s not just nurses and midwives taking part in the mass exodus of the NHS with no one to replace them as demand for services skyrockets \u00e2\u20ac\u201c more than 86,000 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/health-40715955\">NHS posts were vacant<\/a> earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>NMC chief executive and registrar Jackie Smith called the Council\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s latest figures \u00e2\u20ac\u0098worrying.\u00e2\u20ac\u2122<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe are seeing a continuing rise in nurses and midwives leaving the register and our data is clear that this is being driven by both UK and EU registrants,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 she said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThese figures continue to highlight the major challenges faced by the UK\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s health and care sectors around the recruitment and retention of staff. Nurses and midwives work incredibly hard in very difficult circumstances.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>&#8216;Disturbing&#8217;<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Unite head of health Sarah Carpenter called the latest NMC findings \u00e2\u20ac\u0098disturbing\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 and said that they were \u00e2\u20ac\u015bfurther evidence, if more were needed, that the NHS needs a massive cash injection, with a large tranche earmarked for a generous pay rise for staff.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe NHS has been buffeted by austerity-driven cuts and services are at breaking point \u00e2\u20ac\u201c since 2010 the majority of the NHS workforce has seen their pay packets eroded by at least 14 per cent in real terms,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 she added.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unite\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s call comes as NHS and social care leaders <a href=\"http:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/health\/social-care-funding-uk-autumn-statement-government-cry-for-help-a8028436.html\">this week issued a clarion<\/a> call to chancellor Phillip Hammond in a letter demanding more investment and an end to the public sector pay cap as the chancellor prepares for his Autumn budget on November 22.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Carpenter agreed, and criticised the health secretary Jeremy Hunt who said on Monday (October 30) that potential pay rises would likely be <a href=\"http:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/uk\/politics\/jeremy-hunt-health-secretary-philip-hammond-chancellor-fund-nurses-pay-rise-nhs-productivity-a8026541.html\">dependent on productivity<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThis is not the time for the chancellor to indulge in clever accounting tricks linked to so-called \u00e2\u20ac\u0098productivity\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 savings,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 Carpenter argued.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>She said the growing list of evidence showing a major staffing crisis in the health service \u00e2\u20ac\u015bis the final wake-up call on NHS pay to staunch the rapidly increasing exodus of highly skilled staff.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bAnd it should not be forgotten that pay for nurses, health visitors and midwives is the remit of the independent pay review body (PRB).
