{"id":13902,"date":"2017-11-09T16:36:07","date_gmt":"2017-11-09T16:36:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=13902"},"modified":"2017-11-10T14:09:14","modified_gmt":"2017-11-10T14:09:14","slug":"whats-the-rush","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=13902","title":{"rendered":"What\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s the rush?"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>The Tories\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 Brexit trade bill has sparked fury across the labour movement, with union figures saying it would endanger thousands of skilled jobs and allow ministers to circumnavigate parliament and strike \u00e2\u20ac\u015bdodgy deals\u00e2\u20ac\u0165.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/publications.parliament.uk\/pa\/bills\/cbill\/2017-2019\/0122\/18122.pdf\">draft legislation<\/a> was released on Tuesday (November 7), just 24 hours after a supposed \u00e2\u20ac\u015bconsultation\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 on the bill closed.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The bill contains provisions to help the government copy current EU trade deals with non-member states so that the terms still apply to the UK after <a href=\"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/wp-admin\/unitebrexitcheck.org\">Brexit<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Measures to ensure British firms can continue to bid for contracts worth \u00c2\u01411.3trn from foreign governments are also included, as is the creation of a new organisation to defend UK businesses against unfair trade practises.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/wp-admin\/unitelive.org\/tag\/tuc\">TUC<\/a> general secretary Frances O\u00e2\u20ac\u2122Grady, however, said there needs to be focus on what the bill does not include.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>She said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe bill offers no protection for workers\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 rights. It offers no protection for public services like the NHS. And it would let ministers push though dodgy deals.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bLiam Fox must not be allowed to undermine our chances of getting a good deal with the EU by wheeler-dealing with countries that lack proper protections for workers.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe trade bill must guarantee that the price of entry to a trade deal involving Britain is signing up to the strongest protections for workers and public services.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unite assistant general secretary Tony Burke said the government\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s rushed publication of the bill, just 24 hours after the consultation deadline, was symptomatic of its irresponsible\u00c2\u00a0handling of the Brexit process.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>He said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe jobs and rights of millions of UK citizens rest upon getting our trading and customs arrangements right.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Astonishing <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThese are among the most important decisions to face this\u00c2\u00a0country\u00c2\u00a0for generations so rushing out the government\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s proposals only hours after the consultation closes is astonishing.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bIt suggests ministers had no intention of listening to the counsel of others\u00c2\u00a0on these basic issues. Indeed the government is keener to please the US commerce secretary in the hope of cutting a deal than\u00c2\u00a0it is in protecting the rights and interests of the British people.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Rather than cosying up to <a href=\"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/tag\/trump\/\">Donald Trump<\/a>\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s administration, Burke called on the government to remove the uncertainty it is creating over the UK\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s access to EU trade.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>He said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bInvestment, pay and productivity are all stalling because business is losing confidence in the Tories\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 handling of Brexit.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Labour MP Chris Bryant described the trade bill as a \u00e2\u20ac\u015bpower grab\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 that will prevent the parliament from scrutinising the government\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s trade policy after Brexit.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>He said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bThere is nothing in the bill about giving MPs a binding vote on future trade deals negotiated by the government.
