{"id":13973,"date":"2017-11-16T15:12:22","date_gmt":"2017-11-16T15:12:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=13973"},"modified":"2017-11-16T15:50:19","modified_gmt":"2017-11-16T15:50:19","slug":"brexit-bad-eu-uk-workers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=13973","title":{"rendered":"Bad for both EU and UK workers"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>Brexit loomed large at this year\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s industrial sector conferences, with delegates expressing concerns at the Tories\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 lack of a negotiating position and the risk of damage to jobs and the economy if no deal is reached.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In his <a href=\"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/on-the-side-of-justice\/\">keynote speech<\/a> Unite general secretary Len McCluskey described the very real danger of a \u00e2\u20ac\u015bjobs massacre\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 from the government\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s divisions and mishandling of the Brexit process.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Worries were also expressed by international guests from a range of trade union federations, who agreed with Unite\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s demands for Britain to retain access to the single market and a customs union.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>European Transport Federation president Frank Moreels told delegates that a hard <a href=\"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/wp-admin\/unitebrexitcheck.org\">Brexit<\/a> would be bad for both British and EU workers.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>He said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bThere are people who say \u00e2\u20ac\u0098well the British they chose Brexit so get rid of them\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6 if we make a bad agreement with them, well that\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s their problem\u00e2\u20ac\u2122.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bBut that isn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t a good approach. There are an enormous amount of challenges that British working people will have, but there are also an enormous amount of challenges European working people will have with Brexit also.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Praise <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Moreels praised Unite\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s work on Brexit and said EU and British unions must continue to work together to ensure an exit that protects jobs and living standards in the UK and on the continent.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>He said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bI don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t think there are a lot of proposals in the Unite proposals that would be a breaking point between us.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bUnite is very active and has a lot of ideas with how to deal with this issue and a lot of other unions don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t and are not active enough in the reflection of the consequences of Brexit.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>General secretary of the European Federation of Building and Woodworkers, Sam Haggland, said his organisation was in direct opposition to right wing extremists in the Tory party who want to use Brexit as a vehicle to turn the UK into low-tax low-regulation state on the shores of Europe.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Haggland explained that the uncertainty caused by Britain\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s weak and conflict-riven government has increased the chances of such a scenario \u00e2\u20ac\u201c one that Theresa May has used as a <a href=\"http:\/\/uk.businessinsider.com\/theresa-may-stands-ready-to-turn-britain-into-a-tax-haven-after-brexit-2017-1\">threat against the EU<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>\u00e2\u20ac\u0098Damage control\u00e2\u20ac\u2122<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bNow we work with damage control so it won\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t be worse for the workers of the UK. So that the UK won\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t be some sort of haven for employers who want to cut wages and working conditions. We don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t want that because it is will negatively affect the rest of Europe as well,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 Haggland said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>With many worrying about the government\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unitebrexitcheck.org\/opinions\/rose-crawford-liam-foxs-vision-of-britains-trade-future-is-dishonest-and-potentially-dangerous\/\">courting of the Trump administration<\/a> in the US, as well as other nations with questionable reputations over workers\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 rights, International Transport Federation assistant general secretary Rob Johnston said any post-Brexit trade deals must represent the interests of working people.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>He said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe need trade agreements that are not just beneficial to profits but that benefit workers; so they contain clauses that make sure there is social inclusion and protections for workers.
