{"id":13997,"date":"2017-11-21T16:23:04","date_gmt":"2017-11-21T16:23:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=13997"},"modified":"2017-11-21T16:23:04","modified_gmt":"2017-11-21T16:23:04","slug":"enough-enough-hammond","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=13997","title":{"rendered":"Enough is enough, Hammond"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>Gaffe-prone chancellor Philip Hammond has been urged to give public sector workers, battered by pay austerity since 2010, a generous pay rise in Wednesday\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s budget.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bSince the Tories came to power in 2010, they have targeted the public sector for swingeing cuts that have left the workforce with eroding pay packets as they try to do more with fewer resources,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 says Unite assistant general secretary for the public sector, Gail Gartmail.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bJune\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s general election showed that the public has rejected the obsession with the blinkered ideology of austerity and voted for a loosening of the purse strings, so there is more investment in the NHS, education, local government\u00c2\u00a0and infrastructure projects.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bTo make this happen, the public sector needs a generous pay settlement in the budget to catch up on the pay they have lost in real terms since 2010 and attract the dedicated staff we need to sustain vital public services.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>She added, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bSuch pay rises need to be properly funded ie \u00e2\u20ac\u0098new\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 money and not taken from existing allocated budgets.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Open letter <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Chancellor, who is in political hot water after claiming there were \u00e2\u20ac\u0098no unemployed people in the UK, was the focus of an open letter from\u00c2\u00a0)public sector trade union leaders \u00e2\u20ac\u201c including Unite general secretary Len McCluskey\u00c2\u00a0-\u00c2\u00a0calling for the end of \u00e2\u20ac\u0098the pay misery\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 for five million workers providing public services.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bSince 2013, most annual public sector pay rises have been limited to an average of one per cent a year, however, inflation is far outstripping pay rises. The consumer prices index (CPI) was three per cent in October,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 says Cartmail.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bPublic sector workers are, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS), more skilled and experienced, yet pay packets are shrinking with every passing month and they are now worse off than private sector counterparts.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe Chancellor is likely to announce pay increases for some public sector workers on Wednesday \u00e2\u20ac\u201c but this may be linked to productivity.
