The health of lorry drivers is increasingly at risk because of inadequate truck stop facilities, Unite has warned.<\/p>\n

The union called on government and local authorities to \u00e2\u20ac\u015bstop passing the buck\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 and improve welfare facilities for lorry drivers<\/a>, amid concerns that conditions may have significantly worsened in recent years.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The lack of adequate truck stops mean that lorry drivers are forced to park in industrial estates, lay-bys and even in residential roads, where they have no welfare facilities, which damages their health and results in wider environmental implications.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The department for transport (Dft) last published the findings of a survey on the lack of truck stops in 2011.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

It found that in a given period there were 5,676 lorries \u00e2\u20ac\u201c around 40 percent of the total parked \u00e2\u20ac\u201c in non-truck stop locations, with the highest levels of off-site parking occurring in the south east, eastern England and the east midlands.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The DfT is understood to have undertaken a further survey of off-site lorry parking earlier this year but the results of that survey have not been published.<\/p>\n

Unite is concerned that they have been suppressed because the problem is spreading.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u0098Tired and ill\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Unite national officer for road transport<\/a> Adrian Jones said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bDrivers can be away from home for a week or more and without decent facilities they will become tired and ill. Tiredness and other health issues mean that they are at risk of becoming a danger to themselves and other road users.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bIf we do not tackle this problem, drivers are going to vote with their feet and begin leaving the industry at a time when the current Brexit<\/a> uncertainty means that lorry drivers\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 job are set to become even more difficult.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n

The lack of lorry parks with decent welfare facilities is a result of a failure in the free market, Jones explained.<\/p>\n

While the DfT establishes the overall policies, responsibility for providing the parks is that of local authorities<\/a> \u00e2\u20ac\u201c who are unwilling to invest in facilities because they are not hugely profitable.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe government and councils can\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t pass the buck when it comes to truck stops. The lack of facilities has massive health and wellbeing consequences for drivers,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 Jones said.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe lack of truck stops and council\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s closing lay-bys means that drivers are increasingly being forced to park in entirely unsuitable locations, which is bad for them and bad for the local environment.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n

He added, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe free market approach to providing truck stops has been a miserable failure and we urgently need central government to require local authorities to provide adequate driver facilities.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Unite believes in order to meet the needs of lorry drivers, a truck stop should include: 24 hour access, adequate parking and manoeuvring space, a cafeteria with reasonably priced hot meals, washing and toilet facilities including showers, a fuelling facility, an overnight sleeping facility, maintenance facilities and a launderette.<\/p>\n
