{"id":14026,"date":"2017-11-30T16:50:15","date_gmt":"2017-11-30T16:50:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=14026"},"modified":"2017-12-01T15:17:45","modified_gmt":"2017-12-01T15:17:45","slug":"manufacturing-strategy-industrial-strategy-brexit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=14026","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Robust and credible plan&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>Unite\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s new Manufacturing Strategy won praise from MPs yesterday (November 29), with the document being hailed as a \u00e2\u20ac\u015b<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/tonyburke2010\/status\/935878570496462848\">robust and credible plan<\/a>\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 by shadow ministers.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>MPs contrasted the strategy\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s positions on Brexit, the skills crisis and the vital role trade unions have in bringing about a manufacturing renaissance with the government\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s \u00e2\u20ac\u015bthin on the ground\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unitetheunion.org\/news\/industrial-strategy-will-not-equip-workers-and-industry-for-twin-challenges-brexit-and-automation\/\">Industrial Strategy<\/a> \u00e2\u20ac\u201c published this week.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015b<a href=\"http:\/\/unitetheunion.org\/uploaded\/docum\">Shaping the Future of Manufacturing<\/a>\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 was launched in Parliament, where MPs and other guests heard from Unite reps from across the manufacturing sectors involved in drawing up the policies.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The launch was attended by more than 20 MPs, including shadow chancellor John McDonnell, shadow business secretary Rebecca Long-Bailey, shadow defence minister Wayne David and shadow secretary of state for international trade Barry Gardiner.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>&#8216;Powerful&#8217;<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>The document \u00e2\u20ac\u201c which lays out plans to create jobs through investment, plug the skills gap, encourage reshoring, make the UK a global leader in digital technology and stimulate <a href=\"unitelive.org\/tag\/manufacturing\">manufacturing<\/a> growth \u00e2\u20ac\u201c was described as \u00e2\u20ac\u015bpowerful\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 by Long-Bailey.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Other Labour politicians also expressed their backing.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Liz McInnes MP said her background as a Unite rep means \u00e2\u20ac\u015bI know that the Labour Party supports industry\u00e2\u20ac\u0165, while McDonnell said that he and many other Labour MPs are touring workplaces to speak directly to people about their issues.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Criticism was levelled at the government\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s rudderless approach to manufacturing.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Shadow defence minister Wayne David said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bIt\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s astonishing how blind the government is on this issue. They need a proper industrial strategy that involves investment, skills and decent apprenticeships.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Alison McGovern MP took aim at the government\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s disregard for the voice and interests of working people.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>She said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe only way to ensure a successful manufacturing strategy is to ensure we address power imbalance issues.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unite assistant general secretary Tony Burke pointed to the <a href=\"https:\/\/leftfootforward.org\/2017\/11\/the-uks-productivity-problem-comes-from-insecure-work-and-lack-of-investment\/\">German model<\/a> of trade union representation, training and investment as one the UK should learn from.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThere\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s no real reference to dialogue and discussion with unions in the government\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Industrial Strategy.
