Unite accused RBS of decimating its branch network and betraying communities.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The union says serious questions need to be asked about whether these closures mark the end of branch network banking. And just why is the government signing off this alarming branch closure programme?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The bank is slashing its branch\u00c2\u00a0network by closing a further 259\u00c2\u00a0branches across the country \u00e2\u20ac\u201c resulting in another 1,000 staff losing their jobs.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This latest announcement comes on top of previous branch closure announcements which led to over 500 branches being lost.\u00c2\u00a0Royal Bank of Scotland continues to be majority taxpayer supported, yet thousands of taxpayers are now being denied access to local banking.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe\u00c2\u00a0Royal Bank of Scotland has\u00c2\u00a0decided to decimate its bank branch network,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 said Rob MacGregor, Unite national officer.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>He continued, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bNow serious questions need to be asked about whether these closures mark the end of branch network banking.\u00c2\u00a0This announcement will forever change the face of banking in this country\u00c2\u00a0with over a thousand staff losing their jobs and hundreds of high streets without any banking facilities.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe closure of another 259\u00c2\u00a0branches is savage and represents a betrayal of loyal staff and customers who have supported the bank for decades.\u00c2\u00a0Why is the government signing off this alarming branch closure programme?\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 asked Macgregor.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bA\u00c2\u00a0decade of slashing jobs has done nothing to boost morale, increase consumer confidence or improve the bank\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s performance.\u00c2\u00a0This British-taxpayer funded bank should be concentrating on investing in jobs here in the UK, rather than cutting them wholesale.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p><strong><em><\/p>\n<p><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) Unite members were dismayed to learn today (Friday December 1) that the tax-payer backed bank is to cut a quarter of its branches.
