The head of one of the largest trusts in the NHS has quit in protest over Tory funding cuts that are crippling the health service.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

King\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s College hospital chair Bob Kerslake, who lead the civil service until 2015, resigned yesterday (December 11) after a long running dispute over the central London trust\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s finances.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The respected cross-bench peer, who is advising the Labour Party, said the government is in denial about the funding crisis facing the NHS<\/a>.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

In an article for the Guardian<\/em><\/a>, Kerslake said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bKing’s, like many other hospitals, is fighting against the inexorable pressures of rising demand, increasing costs of drugs and other medical supplies, and the tightest spending figures in recent times.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

“There are undoubtedly things that I and the trust could have done better, there always are, but fundamentally our problems lie in the way that the NHS is funded and organised.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

“We desperately need a fundamental rethink. Until then we are simply ‘kicking the can down the road’.”<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Following Kerslake\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s resignation the health service\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s financial regulator, NHS Improvement, placed King\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s into \u00e2\u20ac\u015bfinancial special measures\u00e2\u20ac\u0165.<\/p>\n

Kerslake\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s departure comes after NHS chief executive Simon Stevens\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 called for \u00c2\u01414bn of emergency funding<\/a> to prevent the crisis worsening.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Chancellor Philip Hammond ignored the request during the recent budget and mocked Stevens for implying that \u00e2\u20ac\u015bArmageddon will arrive\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 without the cash injection.<\/p>\n

Unite national officer for health Colenzo Jarrett-Thorpe said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bThis intervention from a highly-respected figure from the frontline of the health service should be a major embarrassment for the government \u00e2\u20ac\u201c yet given the Tories\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 disregard for the NHS and its staff there is little hope that it will spur action.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bKerslake\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s resignation is further evidence that the seven years of destruction the Tories have reigned down on the NHS is adversely affecting patients and that the recent Budget offered nothing of substance to reverse the crisis.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bOnly by injecting fresh funding into the health service, and giving staff a decent pay rise that will allow them to get on with job instead of worrying about making it through the month, can the jewell in Britain\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s crown shine again.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n

Kerslake\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s is the second high profile resignation over Tory policy in as many weeks.<\/p>\n

Last Sunday, the\u00c2\u00a0entire\u00c2\u00a0board of the government\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s\u00c2\u00a0Social Mobility Commission resigned in protest<\/a> over\u00c2\u00a0Theresa May\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s abject failure to deliver on her promise to\u00c2\u00a0address the \u00e2\u20ac\u015bburning injustice\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 of inequality.<\/p>\n
