{"id":14272,"date":"2018-01-04T15:30:23","date_gmt":"2018-01-04T15:30:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=14272"},"modified":"2020-11-12T12:59:14","modified_gmt":"2020-11-12T12:59:14","slug":"colmans-norwich-to-close","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=14272","title":{"rendered":"Colman&#8217;s to close"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>Unite urged Unilever to look again at its business case, following today\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s (January 4) announcement that two centuries of Colman\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Mustard production in Norwich will end in 2019.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The union vowed to fight compulsory redundancies, as Unilever said that production of the iconic Colman\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Mustard will move to Burton on Trent. Last month Britvic announced that it was closing its half of the Norwich site it shared with Unilever.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unite, which has a small number of engineering members at Colman\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s, described the announcement as \u00e2\u20ac\u0098a curate\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s egg\u00e2\u20ac\u2122.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>While it was \u00e2\u20ac\u0098devastating\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 that Colman\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Mustard site was closing, there would be 25 jobs at a new milling facility in or near Norwich that Unilever was jointly setting up with local farmers to process the mustard plants used in the Colman\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s product.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Burton on Trent site, which makes Bovril and Marmite, would see the creation of 43 new production jobs. Packaging for Colman\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Mustard is to move to a Unilever site in Germany.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unite national officer Rhys McCarthy, who has the Unilever portfolio, said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bIt is a devastating day for Norwich that the production of Colman\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Mustard will cease production in 2019, ending a tradition stretching back two centuries.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe are urging Unilever to look again at its business case for closure. The decision last month by Britvic to close its half of the site, which produces its Robinsons and Fruit Shoot brands, was unhelpful for the future of Colman\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Mustard in Norwich \u00e2\u20ac\u201c but we still don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t believe that closure is the only option for the dedicated workforce.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bIn terms of job opportunities, it is a curate\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s egg as there will be new jobs being created at the new milling facility in Norfolk and also at Burton on Trent.
