{"id":14314,"date":"2018-01-09T17:20:02","date_gmt":"2018-01-09T17:20:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=14314"},"modified":"2020-11-12T12:59:13","modified_gmt":"2020-11-12T12:59:13","slug":"constitutional-outrageprotect-industry-plea-and-change-customs-bill","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=14314","title":{"rendered":"\u00e2\u20ac\u0098Constitutional outrage\u00e2\u20ac\u2122"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>Unite has joined forces with manufacturers and other unions to urge MPs to protect manufacturing jobs by amending the controversial customs bill, a key part of the government\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s <a href=\"unitebrexitcheck.org\">Brexit<\/a> legislation.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The union, along with 11 national organisations, sent a briefing to MPs calling for the bill\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s trade remedies to be strengthened to prevent the illegal dumping of components including steel, chemicals, glass and paper.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Taxation (Cross Border Trade) Bill,\u00c2\u00a0known as\u00c2\u00a0the customs bill, is currently undergoing its second reading in the House of Commons and contains trade remedies that are significantly weaker than the current EU ones.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unite, along with leaders from the ceramics, glass, agriculture, paper, chemicals, mineral and steel industries, is clear the bill\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s remedies need to be bolstered to defend British manufacturing jobs against anti-competitive trade practises.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>\u00e2\u20ac\u0098Free for all\u00e2\u20ac\u2122<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bInstead of free trade, the customs bill will create a free-for-all,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 said Tony Burke, Unite\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s assistant general secretary for manufacturing.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bIf the UK has the world\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s weakest trade remedies, many thousands of high quality jobs in manufacturing are at risk across the country. This is too important an issue for the government to carry on regardless. They must make significant improvements to the bill.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Shadow secretary of state for international trade, Barry Gardiner MP, said the bill was another attempt at a \u00e2\u20ac\u015bpower grab\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 by the government because of its use of <a href=\"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/keep-brexit-vow-protect-workers\/\">Henry VIII<\/a> clauses, which would allow ministers to bypass MPs when changing legislation.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Henry VIII clauses also formed part of the government\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s EU Withdrawal Bill, over which Theresa May suffered a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unitebrexitcheck.org\/unite-hails-vote-giving-mps-meaningful-say-on-final-brexit-deal\/\">humiliating defeat<\/a> in December after MPs voted to curb its powers and allow Parliament a proper vote on any final EU deal.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Writing in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/voices\/brexit-latest-news-eu-trade-bill-deal-liam-fox-sovereign-parliament-power-government-a8147431.html\"><em>Independent<\/em><\/a>, Gardiner said the customs bill excludes Parliament from influencing or monitoring trade policy.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>He said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bNo minister should be able to whisk through Parliament agreements that are negotiated behind closed doors.
