{"id":14336,"date":"2018-01-11T17:07:52","date_gmt":"2018-01-11T17:07:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=14336"},"modified":"2020-11-12T12:59:13","modified_gmt":"2020-11-12T12:59:13","slug":"consider-options-callgovt-must-act-over-construction-giants-future","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=14336","title":{"rendered":"\u00e2\u20ac\u0098Consider all options\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 call"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>Unite is calling on the government to \u00e2\u20ac\u015bconsider all possible options\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 including bringing contracts in-house, as doubts continue to grow over the future of Carillion, the troubled construction and outsourcing giant.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Carillion employs over 20,000 workers and there are many more workers reliant on the company\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s future in its supply chains.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unite represents over 1,000 workers at the company and has many more members in the supply chain.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Aside from its construction business the company has a plethora of outsourced public sector contracts in health, education, the prison service and local authorities. It also has contracts in many other industrial sectors.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Despite the government having said that it \u00e2\u20ac\u015bhas contingency plans,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 Unite believes it must go further and make clear that it is considering all options. This should include the possibility of bringing contracts back in-house.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unite also believes that if the government provides any financial assistance or guarantees loans to Carillion, there must be an assurance that workers in the supply chain are protected. Carillion employs very few construction workers on its new build developments, instead relying on sub-contractors and agency labour.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unite received assurances from Carillion after the company\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s share price plunge last November and was assured there was nothing to \u00e2\u20ac\u015bbe concerned about\u00e2\u20ac\u0165.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Carillion is understood to have debts and a pension deficit of \u00c2\u01411.5bn but only has a stock market value of \u00c2\u0141100m.
