{"id":14605,"date":"2018-02-09T16:46:55","date_gmt":"2018-02-09T16:46:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=14605"},"modified":"2020-11-12T12:59:09","modified_gmt":"2020-11-12T12:59:09","slug":"job-limbo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=14605","title":{"rendered":"\u00e2\u20ac\u0098Job limbo\u00e2\u20ac\u2122"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>The boss at the Royal Liverpool Hospital has refused to meet Unite over the future of maintenance staff now in employment limbo because of the controversial Carillion collapse.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unite said that Aidan Kehoe, chief executive at the Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospitals NHS Trust, had snubbed over 50 workers responsible for the repair and maintenance of the trust\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s existing buildings.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The union said the workers, employed by Carillon, were legitimately concerned about their future &#8211; and the best course would be for their roles to be taken back in-house.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThese workers are in an employment limbo through no fault of their own \u00e2\u20ac\u201c they are the victims of the feral capitalism that was the cause of Carillion\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s dramatic collapse,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 said<\/p>\n<p>Unite regional officer Keith Hutson.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Snub <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe fact that highly-paid NHS boss Aidan Kehoe is unable to meet Unite to discuss the future of this group of hardworking maintenance staff is a disgrace and a snub.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThese workers are responsible for the daily maintenance of the trust\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s buildings and all the health and safety implications this entails. They are separate from the new build at the Royal Liverpool Hospital which is unlikely to be finished this year,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 he added.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Hutson continued, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bThese workers are now stranded in an employment \u00e2\u20ac\u0098no man\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s land\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 and could be transferred to a new outsourced provider at any time. We would want to avoid that as we don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t want their pay and conditions salami-sliced by a new company engaged in a race to the bottom.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bAs Carillion is in liquidation, TUPE (Transfer of Undertakings (Protection of Employment) regulations) don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t apply and these workers face loss of continuous service which will impact on their future pay, employment conditions and pensions.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>He concluded, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe mature and sensible way forward would for the trust to take these jobs back in-house \u00e2\u20ac\u201c and that is why Aidan Kehoe\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s intransigent stance is doubly disappointing.
